Confederate Soldiers' Funeral Debated

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- A proposal to have the bodies of eight Confederate sailors lie in state in the Capitol has drawn criticism from some who contend giving them the honor would be unfair and disrespectful.

The sailors' remains were recovered when the submarine H.L. Hunley was brought up in 2000 from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, where it sank shortly after downing the Union blockade ship Housatonic in 1864. The Hunley was the first submarine to sink an enemy ship during a war.

I was not aware of such a "no U.S. flag" movement. I do not agree with it, nor do I believe that either the Friends of the Hunley or the South Carolina Hunley Commission (who are calling the shots on the funeral) had anything to do with it.

If such a petition/movement exists, I strongly suspect that it began, at least, as backlash against earlier protests against the display of the Confederate flag (especially the Battle Flag) at the ceremonies.

I fully expect to see blue-clad (Union) reenactors in the funeral cortege. Should they not bear the proper flag?

This entire subject of protesting what should be a solemn, historical ceremony is disgusting. No matter which side of the issue they are trying to hype, such intrusive opportunists are, IMNSHO, no better than the proverbial "[foreign object] in the punchbowl"...

Honoring Hunley crew re-enactor's final duty

Steve Burt understood honor. Many of us do. Those without honor hate us for it.

Why should these Confederate soldiers get much more recognition for what they gave than others that died at, for example, Gettysburg?

Many of them, especially if they recieved a Pension from the State of South Carolina, had their funerals paid for.

These men were pioneers, and took extreme risks...they deserve to be buried with honors.

Yes, sad to say, truly honorable behavior is a rare (and little-appreciated) commodity nowadays.

BTW, the Post & Courier's website used to have a fantastic chronological set of the reports of Hicks & Kropf -- covering from the discovery of the Hunley...to its raising...to day-to-day archeological discoveries as the interior of the Hunley was excavated in the Lasch Conservation Lab. Now, unfortunately, the link no longer works... :-(

IMHO, the moment when Maria reached into the clump of Dixon's clothing in the bottom bow of the Hunley... and came out with Dixon's "Queenie Bennet" lucky gold piece -- complete with its Shilo bullet dent -- in her hand... will forever be at the top of the list of "thrilling moments in archaeology"!
