"Arnold has to earn votes. This is an election, not a coronation."
What you say is not without merit -- BUT the best way Arnie can earn votes is for Tom to sit down with him and discuss what their differences are, and how to find enough common ground so that Tom can ask his supporters to back Arnold. You know, responsible, reasonable politics, a subject that a lifelong conservative politician should know something about </sarcasm>
But both of us know that Tom won't do this. Losing does NOTHING for Tom's career or his causes. I still care greatly about his causes, even if I no longer give a rat's ass about his career.

Why doesn't Arnold pick up the telephone and call Tom?

By any sane measure, it's well past time for Tom to get out and back the party's best shot. On the news tonight, they showed Bustamante out campaigning for Tom today. Was going on and on about what a great candidate Tom is. I wonder why he was doing that? Maybe he knows something that the Tombots dont.

It yet may come to that- there probably have been lots of feelers put out by party leaders on this on - if not to Tom directly, certainly his staff. But let's face the facts: Tom gets that odd hypnotized look in his eyes whenever someone mentions all the harm he can do by staying in.
At this point, trying to get Tom to do the smart thing is more of a job for a psychologist than a politician. Maybe Arnold is working his way through the Mental Health section of the yellow pages looking for a shrink willing to take on the job!

You seem to miss the point. Arnold and Bustamante are both stalled out. They have been ever since the post Tonight Show euphoria faded. Only McClintock has shown growth in his numbers. And it is anyone's guess as to where the undecideds will break... The polls indicate that Arnold is leading. You see, from my point of view, Arnold's numbers look a lot bigger than Tom's
big enough to win. Do you know what I mean? ;-)

Tom went from 12% to 17% since the Chamber of Commerce's last poll on Sept 1-4. Arnold has gone from 33% to 35%.
Yep, 'tock is plowing right along..... One day he may get to be 50% of where Schwarzenegger is but today he isn't. He's been in the 14 to 18% range in the last three published polls of recent vintage [9/10,18,22].... nothing knew here except maybe a flat line ......
The last C of C poll Schwarzenegger was at 28% not 33% as you post......

McClintock cannot win under any scenarios Again, no. Do the math.
In a three way race if 50% of Schwarzenegger's voters are conservatives and they decide to vote for a conservative instead od Schwarzenegger, McClintock beats both Bustamante and Scwarzenegger.
The math is there.

Wow! This is great! At this rate, Tom will pass Arnold in the poll by....Easter!

you wrote: "Arnie has run a pathetic campaign and is hoodwinking the people of California."
Oh, really???? Then how come he is LEADING in the latest polls??
Whether or not I agree with Arnold or like McC's conservative stances better, Arnold is doing just fine for a "novice."
since it appears likely that Arnold will be the next Governor of California, the question I have for all Freepers is this:
Can any Freeper deny that CALIFORNIA will be better off under Arnold than under Davis or Busty? Note carefully, the question is not what we would prefer, or whether conservatives or the republican party gains or suffers, but whether CALIFORNIA will be better off with Arnold as governor than with Davis or Busty.

The ONLY way McC can win is if he is the ONLY candidate running, period. Wake up.

In this scenario Schwarzenegger doesn't drop out.

McClintock's positive to negative numbers are incredible for a "right winger". He has an excellent jump start for a future statewide run.
