i don't think western PA will get hit directly, but i am sure there will be a ton of rain etc. My brother and his family live in the Youngstown area of eastern OH and they are already saturated, and expect flooding there.

Thanks! The school has said nothing about it as of 6:00 am CST. I will tell her to follow your advise. Thanks for the heads up about gasoline and cash!
We live 20 minutes from Galveston Island in Texas and I forgot to remind her about that. Sheesh!!

i think everyone is sitting tight at this point, so it isn't odd that the school hasn't said anything. i went to the fairfax co. school website and they pretty much said, keep checking back. everyone is preparing to stand by.

Thanks for the information. I don't have TWC but I'm trying to get some info from UA. So far they have not cancelled any flights from Roanoke, but that could change. Thanks again!

Virginia Tech is in Blacksburg, VA, not Alexandria, about 250 miles distant. If your daughter is in Alexandria, she is not going to VA Tech. You might want to see where that tuition money is going.

The main campus is in Blacksburg, true. VaTech also has a branch campus in Alexandria (Architecture Center, Research Institute, etc.).

I know the Tidewater universities are shut down and many schools in the Richmond area are closing at noon today. Same over here on the Eastern shore - including the colleges in Maryland.
OH goody - now I will have a bored 5yo for 4 and a half days instead of just 4!!!!

I'm in Richmond. William and Mary is closed.
Christopher Newport Univ. is closed.
ODU is closed.
Most community colleges in Tidewater are closed.
The Navy has evacuated most of the ships in Norfolk. Langley AFB has evacauated some of their jets inland.
Most hotels in Richmond are booked. I'm hearing that hotels as far west as Roanoke are getting filled.
Our weather reports are calling for 5-10 inches of rain on our totally saturated area. Winds up to 74 mph.
My cats are already starting to act weird - they hate storms.

remove items from the yard that could be sent air borne by the winds I am trying to decide whether to take down the grape arbor. It's one of those redwood arches that has 6 inch aluminum spikes at the end of the "feet." About four feet wide and seven feet tall. Also anchored by two "irrationally exuberant" grape vines.
Also, what about potted plants in flowerpots? We've got every size from six inches to ten gallon.
And, what about firewood that's stacked on cinder blocks and covered by a tarp held down with bricks?

Virginia Beach is "encouraging" evacuation as of 11 a.m. this morning. This weasley governor. Argh. I heard on the radio coming in to work that evacuation of Virginia Beach/Tidewater is ordered but left to the discretion of local authorities. I'm not at all sure what that's supposed to mean.
To: Sally'sConcerns
FOR CARTERET COUNTY...A MANDATORY EVACUATION IS IN EFFECT FOR PEOPLE ON BOGUE BANKS...That's Atlantic Beach. They are probably take one on the chin.
