My daughter is at Virginia Tech in Alexandria VA this semester. I called her this morning and the girls were only vaguely aware that there was a hurricane coming - no TV, no internet hooked up and they only listen to CD's.
Is Alexandria in the path of this storm? Should I tell her to get out of there and if so, where should she go? She has a car but the closest friend or family is in Alabama. She said the university has not made any plans for them so I told her to get some water, flashlights & batteries, candles only if that's the only choice and some canned goods (already had hand powered can opener).
Is Alexandria far enough inland to be safe from this storm?

I know this is going to sound petty - but why in heaven's name do these national yo-yo's choose to ignore the fact there are a lot of people on the EASTERN shore of the Chesapeake - and the fact there are people in Virginia there too????????
don't get me wrong - I'm not making this complaint because I live on the ES of VA - I've been saying the same danged thing for 20 years about the total neglect of the national media to even acknowledge the existence of the entire DelMarVa peninsula. And on the rare occasions they do mention it - most have no clue what or where it is.

I'm in Raleigh; she "may" come by here, depending on how fast she turns.
We're still going to get big time winds, I think.

I will be praying for all in the path of this monster. I don't know much about hurricanes,( being on the left coast). I know all about earthquakes and socialist states.

That's the thing -- we'd think she was beautiful if she wasn't aimed right at our houses!

Her dorm is an old church converted to apartments located on Patrick Street (the Gallery?). She did tell me she is one subway stop away from Washington, D.C.

I know exactly who Dan Blather is - I was referring to the guy from TWC (Schwartz?) that everyone keeps talking about.
Blather was an anchor/reporter on my local news before he went to the CBS Evening news - gives you an idea of just how long I've known who he is!!!!

Something awe inspiring about this bad girl...I can't imagine how horrifying it used to be when they didn't have a clue what was coming.

She should check with her dorm administration.
And she should do what you said, get some supplies, some cash (the ATMs will not work if the power goes off), some gas (same thing), some food and then SIT TIGHT......
Tell her to listen to the LOCAL TV stations. Not the cable.

I was thinking that same thing about Hazel. Of course, you're not old enough to remember, but I do: I couldn't believe all the parents came to take their children out of school in the middle of the day.
In Burlington.

she should look into what the school is saying. i know where Patrick Street is, and while not down ON the water, it is in Old Town. she should do what howlin said and get supplies for sure. and listen to the radio WTOP, WMAL etc. or the local tv channels.

From the looks of the current maps, should I assume that it is going to pass through Pittsburgh? and at the same intensity?
To: Howlin
i am not totally prepared myself, but i will be by tomorrow. i am walking distance from the Safeway, but ain't gonna be walking nowhere when this hits. i am going to monitor Fairfax Co. school website to see what they intend to do tomorrow, and unfortunately i have one that follows Montgomery Co. so i will be whirling like a dervish. xshub will get safely out of town tomorrow, most likely, and i will be left to contend!
