Hurricane Isabel Is Falling Apart/But Could Re-Gain Strength-Live Thread
NHC | 9-16-03 | my favorite headache

Hurricane Isabel is falling apart and fast. Re-Con planes have been flying in the storm since midnight and the entire west quad of the storm has disappeared. The eastern portion of the storm has a wind around 110KTS. There is discussion that re-strengthening will occour within 24 hours though so this still remains a threat.

Pressure has dramatically risen as well. Discussion currently is Isabel making landfall in either Northern South Carolina or Southern North Carolina and a due north move after landfall. Thinking is a landfalling Category 2 minimal 3 storm.

Hmm. 50 mph wind guts on Thursday in Charlotte, 35 mph wind guts on Friday. That's series. Not hugh, but series.

Make that TWO more sets of stakes for the tent and some cinderblocks to keep our display from blowing away.

The irony is, this art/craft show at which we're displaying this weekend (Festival in the Park, Freedom Park, Charlotte) was blown away by Hugo in 1989. Doesn't look like it'll be that bad this time...we hope.

Yeah, did somebody forget to tell the people at Accuweather that this is not a CAT 5 anymore????

That's a forecast gust, which is quite possible with sustained winds of, say, 115mph.

See what 1,000 post hurricane threads, five days before landfall, can do to people.

Freepers on Cops: "I told him to get off his a$$ and read what Howlin and My Favorite Headache have been saying, but he just wanted to watch the Dolphins. So I chucked a knife at him."

Yeah, I know the winds can gust that high, but several hundred miles inland?

Geeze, what is that thing supposed to represent? If it is blowing 39-58 mph here in MD now, we're in for some serious sh-- when Isabel comes callin'.

(P.S. There is barely a leaf moving here in Columbia)

"Woman, 70, hurls knife at husband who wouldn't prepare for hurricane"

Could be the storm's first fatality if he passes on.

Isabel is expected to make landfall Thursday, and Washington is among the cities in its current path. But officials say it's unclear whether the storm will affect Bush's schedule. He's due to host Jordan's King Abdullah at Camp David late Thursday and Friday.

You won't have any problem flying out, flying home may be a problem. Worst case would be that the flight is delayed. JMHO.

No eye wall yet, but it is spitting out the dry air it sucked in.

Yep - outflow is symmetrical again, there is a lot more deep convection starting to wrap around from the NE to the NW, and it looks like the system is starting to tap into Gulf of Mexico humidity (low clouds coming across Florida and into the storm), which is displacing the dry air that was weakening the storm. It's re-intensifying.
