When you are as extreme as Bustamante is and can still tie down a major chunk of your party as he has, there isn't much in the way of a PR hit that can hurt you.
Uh I can't remember where I read it but didn't some KKK nut just come out in support of Buste?

Given another 23 years, he could rise high enough in the polls to win in 2003!

Methinks you have this backwards. Arnold is the spoiler, and was even intended as such.
Look at his behavior. Against Prop 54. Against a referendum on SB 60. Won't take a no tax pledge. Does this look like a guy who cares if he pisses off his base?
He doesn't, because he doesn't intend to be governor. He's a gameplayer, and always has been. Just ask the people with whom he used to work out and compete.

I agree, McClintock seems to be on the take.

Does this poll mean that McClintock would get 21% total if the election were held today, OR does it mean Tom gets 21% of Ueberroth voters?

The guy who is has two times the vote of the next highest candidate is NOT the spoiler.
The guy who probably is on the take who can't win but is still in this is the very definition of spoiler. That is McClintock.
His followers have joined the Democrat party in electing the radical Democrat Bustamante.
McClintock showing he is not a team player and by sabotaging the Republican party in this race has gained far more enemies than support for any future political ambition in California.
His career is dead and after he is out due to term limits he will be retired and be forced to look for the first real job of his life outside of government.
No more government welfare for Tom McClintock.
You can't bend the people of California over, do a number on them and expect them to vote him in ever again.
He is THROUGH!

You keep saying the same garbage, but it doesn't make it true.
McClintock can't lose support from the party establishment because he never had such support in the first place.

Means when he stays in, he still sabotages the race against the Republicans for the most Radical of Democrats Bustamante.

Curiosity here: When they conduct these polls how do they determine that the people polled are actually likely to vote? Any way to determine the validity of the likelihood?

I'm waiting for a legitimate poll taken AFTER Davis signed SB60. Everything else is irrelevant, IMO.
To: Pubbie
It means he gets 21% of Uberroth's votes.
Adds up to about 1%.

Well, Buste's already on record with the "n" word, so that's not liable to do any more damage...the RATS are still going for him. They just don't eat their own, no matter how damaged. Torricelli had to have indictments come down to get the RATS to abandon him, and then only when they could game the system.
To: cyncooper
I didn't start by dis-believing Arnold, I came to disbelieve him when he A) proved liberal on every issue other than taxes, and B) brought in advisors who have repeatedly supported increasing taxes.
He could have started regaining my confidence by supporting Prop 54, or in some other way giving concrete evidence that he can take & defend an unpopular stand.
To: ambrose
So he can't get support from the GOP?
Must be a real tool to pull that one off.
This is being proved in this election as he bends the people of California over and does a number because he needs to feel some sort of control of the election.
This seems psychotic on his part to me. Wonder if he had a break down?
Well the party will do everything in it's power I hope to bury his career after this. He deserves nothing from Republicans but jeers!

"Lungren was the co-author of the 1986 Amnesty for Illegal Aliens."
Everyone here seems to do their best to either ignore Lundgren or minimize his conservatism. Only five years ago he ran for governor as the ideal conservative candidate. Previously a congressman, currently Attorney General, impeccable law and order and social issue credentials, even considered as vice-presidential material.
He got wallopped by the loser we're recalling today. So you downplay this by saying he authored the Amnesty for Illegal Aliens. End of discussion? That's the reason he lost? Or that in itself proves that no matter what else he's done he's no conservative?
I think what it really represents is McClintock supporter's (and I would vote for him in a heartbeat against Boxer) failure to accept that hardcore conservatism is not a winning platform in California. Won't be for a long time.
To: republicofdavis
Lungren was also a gun grabber.

What are your favorite Bustamante views? Because a vote NOT FOR ARNOLD is accepted as an effective passive vote for Cruz who you would be helping to elect.
So which Cruz Bustamante positions are you for?

"No, it says how politically effective McClintock has been. Without Party support, and with far less money and name recognition, he is only doing 8% less than Schwarzenegger against Bustamante after only 4 weeks of the campaign."
I guess it is a matter of perspective. I might say: McClintock has been in California government for over 20 years. Lost statewide office twice, the 3rd is on the way.
You call that "politically effective?" Your standard is too low.

No. I voted for him, despite his limp, timid campaign.
