Governor Calls 3rd Special Session (Texas Redistricting)
AP ^ | 09.09.2003

Posted on 09/09/2003 1:24:00 PM PDT by SolidSupplySide

Governor Rick Perry has called a third special legislative session that is set to begin Monday. That's what his spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The decision follows two special sessions on congressional redistricting during the summer. Neither produced a new redistricting plan as Democrats in the Texas Senate blocked a floor vote on a proposal.

Perry spokeswoman Kathy Walt didn't immediately offer details about the third session, but says the governor's proclamation would be issued shortly.

From the Quorum Report:

GOVERNOR PLACES 8 ITEMS ON THE CALL
In adddition to redistricting

The call:

To consider legislation relating to congressional redistricting.

To consider legislation relating to state fiscal management, including adjustments to certain school district fiscal matters made necessary by recent changes in state fiscal management; making related appropriations.

To consider legislation relating to the dates of certain elections, the procedures for canvassing the ballots for an election, and the counting of certain ballots voted by mail.

To consider legislation modifying the filing period and related election dates for the primary elections in Texas.

To consider legislation relating to the financing, construction, improvement, maintenance, and operation of toll facilities by the Texas Department of Transportation and the disposition of money generated by the driver responsibility program, fines imposed for certain traffic offenses, and certain fees collected by the Department of Public Safety of the State of Texas; making an appropriation.

To consider legislation relating to the reorganization of, efficiency in, and other reform measures applying to state government.

To consider legislation appropriating fees established by legislation from the 78th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature that remain unappropriated. This matter shall be strictly construed to only include fees that were established during that session of the legislature. Legislation relating to making an appropriation for the purpose of returning to a fund outside of the state treasury cash that was transferred from the fund to the general revenue fund.

===========================

Looks like they may put off the election date, too.

Its not enough that we mearly reduce the number of Democrats that can be elected in Texas. They must be eliminated. The Republicans should begin mass incarceration of Democrats in Texas.

This is beautiful.

Once this passes, the saddle strap of the "expense of special sessions" argument gets cinch tightly to the chicken D's. As they try to speak through the bit, we will just yank back on the reigns and point out that if they were just going to pass it anyway, why waste all that money making fools of themselves in NM?

Stay tuned in for this and many other humiliating arguments during the next election cycle! Senate Republicans facing judicial filibusters, pay attention to how it is done!

Special Session #3 MONDAY !! See post #16, folks ! ...

Perry calls back lawmakers for fourth round at redistricting

Excerpt:

Gov. Rick Perry today called lawmakers to come back to Austin on Monday for a fourth try at drawing new congressional districts.

< snip >

In addition to congressional redistricting, Perry today ordered lawmakers to consider a list of eight topics, including several, such as government reorganization and some fiscal matters, that died along with the redistricting effort.

Added for the first time is consideration of the possible movement of the spring primary elections, a move that could be needed if Democrats succeed in stalling redistricting again.

Any new congressional boundaries drawn by lawmakers would have to be approved by the U.S. Department of Justice. There is uncertainty on the deadline for drawing new lines in time to gain the federal approval for use of the new districts in the March 2 primaries.

Please let me know if you want ON or OFF my Texas or General Interest ping list!. . .don't be shy.

There are rumors that the 51 RAT reps will dart into another state this time.

Then put a bounty on their heads. 50K each ..... someone will get them.

Let's hope special session # 3 will be the charm. What do you think about Senator Hutchinson wanting to go against Governor Perry?

Third's a charm is right. I don't care for Hutchison that much. She gets my vote because she is in the 'R' column (GOP) ...

I would prefer she NOT even try ...

Our Republican Women's club meeting is Monday, or I'd be in Austin for the opening that morning. But, I will be there Tuesday, for the 5th day I've been Doctor for the Day.

I'm looking forward to seeing Leticia again. (Yea, right!)

My hunch is that Tom Craddick wants a Midland district so that he can run for US Congress.
