Joyce Kilmer's house in NJ where he wrote his famous poem is right down the street from my childhood home. I recall a tree, maybe one, outside the window. A small tree, probably not an oak.

What does a 300 year old oak look like? Like a cross between a Spotted Owl and a Bald Eagle
Doh! Wrong punch line!

"So it sunk. You, too, can add excitement to a family boating picnic by making a boat out of a tree trunk and trying to paddle someplace on a windy day." Nah, it was swamped when the comet fragment plunged into the sea in that area. Baillie has found 1-2 others that are partially finished and that was his speculation in his book, Exodus To Arthur.

Have you ever noticed [Andy Rooney] that most of the ancient log boats found are partially finished?
If you think about it, that might be because the finished log boats were in use, that is, lost in deep water, the usual outcome.

"The age of the tree and WHEN it was carved is two different things. If I take a 300 year old stump and carve it into an old corn pounding mechanism, is the mechanism 300 years old?? "
Good question. I think I might have a small clue to donate as to how that could be.
My understanding is that folks who have devoted their lives to studying tree rings are able to take the patterns of the thin lines/thick lines, denoting general climate conditions during that year of the tree's growth. This tree can be compared to other studies and they can find where in time the general climatological patterns match. They are using tree ring data to confirm carbon dating results, whenever possible. These tree ring patterns are quite well known among those concerned with dating old artifacts. It might not give you the exact year the canoe was carved, but because of the patterns of the rings, and understanding that a hollowed out canoe will contain most of the tree, one could probably make a pretty good guess when the tree was cut down.
If I'm way off base, I'm hoping someone will set me straight.

"If I'm way off base, I'm hoping someone will set me straight." You have it correct. The pueblos are dated to one specific year using this technique. The dates of later repairs are also dated to one year.
