Forgive me, but You're an Old Detroiter if:

You took a "moonlight cruise" to Bob-lo with Captain Bob-lo or went to Edgewater amusement Park.

You remember the big stove that was on Jefferson Ave. at the entrance to Belle Isle.

You shopped at Hughes and Hatcher, B. Siegel, Peck and Peck, Himelhoch's,Robert Halls, Crowley's, Shoppers Fair, EJ Korvettes or Federals.

You rode the elevator at J. L. Hudson, which was "run" by an elevator operator with her white gloves on.

You remember a Winkleman's and Sanders store in your neighborhood.

You remember the "Big Snow", Buffalo Bob, Howdy Doody, Clarabell, PhineasT. Bluster, and Princess Summer-Fall-Winter-Spring.

You remember Twin Pines Dairy delivered milk and juice to the chute on the side of your house and Milky the Clown performed magic with the magic Words, "Twin Pines".

You remember the Good Humor man in a white uniform, ringing the bells and driving down your street.

You remember the Olympia Stadium.

You remember when Vernor's  was made  on Woodward Ave.  and a bearded troll was on the bottle.

Your mom got groceries at Great Scott, Food Fair, Wrigley's or Chatham.

Your mom saved Holden Red Stamps, S&H Green Stamps, or Gold Bell Gift Stamps and you licked the stamps and put them in those little books.

Kresge's and Woolworth's were "DIME STORES".

You had an Uncle in the furniture business (Joshua Doore).

You know who Bill Kennedy is.

You remember this telephone number:  Tyler 8-7100 (Belvedere Construction) and the slogan "We do good work".

Your phone number may have started with Tyler, Vermont, Broadway,Kenwood,Diamond, Webster, Dunkirk, Warwick, Vinwood, Townsend, University orTrinity.

You saw the Detroit Lions play football in Tiger Stadium.

You remember Black Bart and the Faygo pop song.  Or how  about "Which way did they go?  Which way did he go?  He went for Faygo, old fashion root beer".

You watched Rita Bell's Prize Movie in the mornings.

You know who Sonny Elliot is.  Do you remember Sonny using chalk on a map of Michigan?

You remember Jack LeGoff and Van Patrick.

You remember Milky the Clown, Soupy Sales, Johnny Ginger, Poopdeck Paul and Captain Jolly, Fred Wolf from the whacky wiggloo.

You visited the Wonder Bread Bakery and got to take home a mini loaf of bread.

Your address had a two-digit "zone" before there were zip codes. Detroit19, Michigan.

You remember "Get on the right track at 9 Mile and Mack, to get the best deal in town.  Roy O'Brian...it's the best deal in town".

Your house had a laundry chute and a milk chute and a coal chute.

You remember going to Detroit Edison with your mom to exchange burned out light bulbs for new ones.

No, can't say as I do. I just remember we were at my Aunt's in Livonia watching the news, and my Dad and Uncle said simultaneously (sp)something like, 'They'll never see him again'.

It wasn't "Get 'Em & Go(to Hell)" was it? Or "Hot & Now(You're A Dead Man)"? Or "Dog & Suds(And Cement Boots)"?

Sorry...

He was one major jerk of a prima madonna. He flew his own jet (not too common back then) and had promised Mickey Lolich a ride back from some road trip, but 'forgot' him. He could give lessons to some of these current sports zeroes. Guess he was just ahead of his time!

I read Bill Freehan's book, Behind the Mask, when I was a kid. Denny made an excuse not to show up for a game, sick stomach or something. Right in the middle of the game, Freehan said he looked up and saw a small plane flying over the stadium that looked like Denny's. "At least I think that was Denny's plane...". Heh heh. Is he out of prison yet? Too bad he was such a dirtbag.

Ah, yes, that wascally Ford family. Buy just enough good players to keep butts in the seats, don't worry about a championship. Lions fans are either the most loyal, or the dumbest, fans in the world. (I'm one of them)

I always joke that the Lions are the Cubs fans of Football.

Oh No!! My dad forced us to watch that! Well, we could have left the room, but were generally glued to the set.

"oh remember me when the candle lights are burnin'
remember me at the close of a long, long day\
it would be so sweet in all the dreams I'm dreamin'
just to know that you remember me."

John Fetzer owned WKZO (3) TV and radio and he owned the Tigers, too. Back when Jim Campbell was General Manager and the 2 of them did their best to have the cheapest run team in the bigs...it was inspite of them that the Tigies won in '68.

Buck Barry was on WOOD-TV out of Grand Rapids. He had retired to New Mexico or Arizona and passed away just a couple of years ago. He really was a neat guy!

Last I heard he was at a half-way
house. He was working at a 7-11 at Mound and Metro Park Way,(aka 16 mile).

I read that book, too. He said that even in the midst of an important game, if you went to the mound to talk to Lolich, he'd want to talk about food...cheeseburgers,etc.
When he ended up with the donut shop, he always said that people figured it would be that or a bar. I haven't seen anyone pitch in years that had such a 'buddha-belly'...and could out and out PITCH.

The Tigers did him dirty, trading him to the Mets for 'Pop-up' Staub. After a year there, he begged them to take him back... he was willing to work dirt cheap. They refused. He retired rather than be away from his family and home. After a year off, he signed with the Padres and ended up breaking his arm ( I don't think he was ever on the DL). and retired for real.

When they retired Al Kaline's number, Mickey got as big (if not bigger) of an ovation as Al did. The fans finally got to show him that he was really loved in Detroit.

It was the Machus Red Fox restaurant and if I'm not mistaken it was the woodward ave. location that Hoffa was last seen, a restaurant I frequented many times in the 70's. I really miss that place, not many restaurants nowadays require a coat to eat. If you were to show up without a coat and tie they would provide one for you. That was class. Something that is being forgotten in this day and age.

You are an old Detroiter if you remember the Tigers actually have a decent team.

You mean the likes of Hal Newhouser, Virgil Trucks, Paul Trout, George Kell, etc.?

If you know who Ernie Harwell is.

I know. He was the voice of the Baltimore Orioles from 1954 (when the Orioles came into major league baseball) until about 1960.

Now do you remember the name of the restaurant where Jimmy Hoffa had his last lunch?

Machus Red Fox. We lived around the corner. I still make their signature salad. Loved it!

Anyone remember the name of the UofM football announcer who would go bonkers whenever Michigan scored?

Also..who else used to go see Bob Seeger for a quarter at local teen centers?

Also, saw the Beatles at Olympia Stadium in the 60's. Couldn't hear a word as everyone was screaming.

Thanks for the tour down memory lane.

I graduated from Seaholm HS with Tim Allen (Tim Dick) in 1971. Was a large class and didn't know him. Also hung out with Christine Lahti's younger sister...all Seaholm graduates.

My brother went to school with that ultra liberal commentator...Michael Kingsley (?)

Anyone remember the Detroit riots?
