Several Freepers are engaged in a research project to evaluate whether the book of astronomy in 1 Enoch gives the modern day reader any clues concerning its authenticity.

Look how Enoch lines up with other sources

The Tree of Knowledge
Enoch

Chapter 32

1 And after these fragrant odours, as I looked towards the north over the mountains I saw seven mountains full of choice nard and fragrant trees and cinnamon and pepper. 2 And thence I went over the summits of all these mountains, far towards the east of the earth, and passed above the Erythraean sea and went far from it, and passed over the angel Zotiel. And I came to the Garden of Righteousness, 3 I and from afar off trees more numerous than I these trees and great-two trees there, very great, beautiful, and glorious, and magnificent, and the tree of knowledge, whose holy fruit they eat and know great wisdom. 4 That tree is in height like the fir, and its leaves are like (those of) the Carob tree: and its fruit 5 is like the clusters of the vine, very beautiful: and the fragrance of the tree penetrates afar. Then 6 I said: 'How beautiful is the tree, and how attractive is its look!' Then Raphael the holy angel, who was with me, answered me and said: 'This is the tree of wisdom, of which thy father old (in years) and thy aged mother, who were before thee, have eaten, and they learnt wisdom and their eyes were opened, and they knew that they were naked and they were driven out of the garden.'

Why was it forbidden for Adam and Eve to eat from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and here they are allowed?

Excerpt from: Sha'are Orah, Gates of Light

The one who understands these great allusions which apply to Adam eating of the Tree of Knowledge during a period when the tree was ARLA will know why the tree is known as he Tree of Knowledge, and why it is called "of Good and Evil." It would have been possible for the tree to be called "Good and not Evil" if the Tree of Life had connected to the Tree of Knowledge instead of the entity known as ARLA; thus it is written: "She makes good and not evil for him all the days of his life." Now see the great power of Israel when it acts under the command of God, may He be Blessed. He commanded Adam that he should wait a moment and not eat from the ARLA and he could not do it. He commanded Israel to wait three years and they did so, thus it is written:

"You shall have three years when you will not eat AReLim." Leviticus 19:24

Let me intimate. "For the tree is good for eating." "And you planted all the food-bearing trees." "You shall regard is fruit as ARLA." "And she took from its fruit." "Three years shall it be ARLA for you" - these represent the three walls of ARLA. "The fourth year should be set aside for sacred jubilation" - the fourth wall is thin."...and the fifth year you shall eat of its fruit"

If Adam had waited to eat of the fruit when it stood in the place that stands with the essence of that which is called the fifth, they would have never been brought to the abyss. Know that that one who understands the essence of the fourth and fifth years which are mentioned in chapters dealing with ARLA will understand the essence of what it means for ARLA to be attached to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil, and the essence of this separation from it through the fifth.

The Land of Dan

Chapter 13

Then I wrote out their petition, and the prayer in regard to their spirits and their deeds individually and in regard to their 7 requests that they should have forgiveness and length.

And I went off and sat down at the waters of Dan, in the land of Dan, to the south of the west of Hermon: I read their petition till I fell 8 asleep.

Genesis 14

14 When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained men born in his household and went in pursuit as far as Dan. 15 During the night Abram divided his men to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

Note: The land was allotted to Dan (way) before he was born.

Pesach (Passover)

Genesis 18

1   And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre: and he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;
2   And he lift up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself toward the ground,
3   And said, My LORD, if now I have found favour in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant:
4   Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree:
5   And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye shall pass on: for therefore are ye come to your servant. And they said, So do, as thou hast said.
6   And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said, Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth.

Make ready quickly...three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes

Why is Abraham giving cooking lessons to Sarah?

Later that same day...

Genesis 19

1   And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2   And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3   And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

They were observing Pesach. They were also the only ones to get out of Sodom alive.

360 day years/time frame in Daniel and Revelation

Daniel 7:25

And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Daniel 12:7

And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

Revelation 11

1 I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, "Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count the worshipers there. 2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles. They will trample on the holy city for 42 months. 3 And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth." 4 These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that stand before the Lord of the earth.

42 months = 3.5 years
1260 = 360 x 3.5

Revelation 12:14

And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

...and it goes on and on and on...

Freepers reading Jeremiah Jr's post which marks *ARLA..and Arelim...may be wonder if JJ's gone AWOL as far a scripture goes.

Actually...**No..

And...ARLA...AR e LiM..is really serious business..or as the Jamaicans say...

"Truly Dread Mon.... Truly Dread".

Hebrew words have root meanings..with motion/possesion attachment.

Then it gets REDACTL....like Enochs comment about the *Fallen Angels...who descended in the days of Jared.
ie..Jared,,[Yahred]..means to come down from above.

back to Arelim...were do we see Arelim in scripture?

***EVERYWHERE...!!

Yechezkel 32 518 Orthodox Jewish Bible

22| Ashur (Assyria) is there and all her kahal; his kevarim are about him; all of them slain, fallen by the cherev;
|23| Whose kevarim are set in the recesses of the bor (pit), and her kahal (company) is all around her kevurah; all of them slain, fallen by the cherev, which caused terror in Eretz Chayyim.
|24| There is Elam and all her multitude around her kevurah, all of them slain, fallen by the cherev, which are gone down *arelim (uncircum- cised) into the lower parts of ha'aretz, which caused their terror in Eretz Chayyim; yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the bor (pit).
|25| They have set her a mishkav (bed) in the midst of the slain with all her multitude; her kevarim are all around him; all of them *arelim (uncircumcised), slain by the cherev; for they spread terror in Eretz Chayyim, yet have they borne their shame with them that go down to the bor (pit); he is put in the midst of them that are slain.
|26| There is Meshech, Tuval, and all her multitude; her kevarim are all around him; all of them *arelim (uncircum- cised), slain by the cherev, though they caused their terror in Eretz Chayyim.
|27| And they shall not lie with the gibborim that are fallen of the *arelim (uncircumcised), which are gone down to Sheol with their weapons of milchamah; and they have laid their charavot (swords) under their heads, but their avonot shall be upon their atzmot, though they were the terror of the gibborim in Eretz Chayyim.
|28| Indeed, thou shalt be broken in the midst of the *arelim (uncircumcised), and shalt lie with them.

where else does **Arelim appear?

Arelim is also a name for mankind..alligned with the *Fallen Angels..or

SEEN as...equal to ..the rebellious Angels.

The term (Uncircumcised)..means..*Out of the covenant..cut off...fineto!

Fallen Angels....Fineto!

Mankind..who follows after...turns the way of ...the *Fallen Angels..

Uncircumcised....cut off from the Lords Realm.

This is why the wording..of Cast down with the UNcircumcised..

sort of.."Your going to go ..just like them*[Fallen Angels]..Appears in the Hebrew

The story of the Fallen Angels....Satan ..and the Garden.

Mans judgement does not preceed the *Fallen Angels.

Mankind is weighed in the balances..and assayed.

Mankinds Judgement...and the Fall of the Angels...are entwined.

Very interesting indeed! Thank you so much for the research!!!

I wonder if there is some subtlety in the canon using a 360 day year whereas Enoch uses a 364 day year. It is my belief that the tribulation described in Revelation completes the punishment of God which was largely satisfied by the banishment to Babylon. As one scholar noted, it is very strange for a pseudepigraphal work to not mention either Moses or Jewish tradition – and yet the Essenes were anti-Hellenistic. Taken together, I wonder if these facts underscore the beginning blessing where Enoch indicates his message is looking forward to the “elect ones” – i.e. Christians.

Daniel 2

17Then Daniel went to his house, and made the decision known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, 18that they might seek mercies from the God of heaven concerning this secret, so that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19Then the secret was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. So Daniel blessed the God of heaven.
20Daniel answered and said:

        "Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,
        For wisdom and might are His.
        21And He changes the times and the seasons;
        He removes kings and raises up kings;
        He gives wisdom to the wise
        And knowledge to those who have understanding.
        22He reveals deep and secret things;
        He knows what is in the darkness,
        And light dwells with Him.

        23"I thank You and praise You,
        O God of my fathers;
        You have given me wisdom and might,
        And have now made known to me what we asked of You,
        For You have made known to us the king's demand."

Hebrew - English translations are paramount. I have Hebrew English translations from Genesis 1 to Revelation 22. And yes, the New Testament was originally written in Hebrew.

Personally, I think many people get too caught up worshipping "The Canon". It's easy to believe in "The Canon" because it was decided by a committee a long time ago. Kind of like the Jews believing in the dead Prophets but not being able to accept Jesus, of whom all the Prophets testified.

The fact is, Enoch was considered canonical by many and had a lot of influence on the New Testament. I can't say I believe any version of Enoch has survived perfectly but I do think there's probably a lot of worth in there.

I just discovered the Book of Enoch as a result of my daily Mass readings (one of those 100 reference points of the New Testament). An online search found a text. A simple FR search found your thread and your analysis/discussion/research. FASCINATING. Much to consider. How's your research coming?

Let me also point out that your thread is now officially into 2005.

Thank you so much for your interest and for making this an official 2005 endeavor!

The research has been somewhat dormant - mostly because of the translations.

The latest translation is the one in Charlesworth's Pseudepigrapha collection. On last account, none of the ones available on the internet had all the latest information, footnotes, etc.

That makes it a bit difficult to discuss as a group on the forum. Nevertheless, I'd be very much interested in hearing whatever you find. And if you are wondering how a passage online compares with the Charlesworth collection, I'll be glad to look it up for you!
