Supporters of Chief Justice Roy Moore have been handcuffed and led away from the Ten Commandments monument in Montgomery. They had refused to leave the monument after Moore lost a last-ditch appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court this afternoon. The federal judge who ordered the monument's removal is now expected to consider a contempt of court finding on Friday. That could set the stage for the monument to be removed ... or fines imposed on the state.
Scores of Moore supporters sang and prayed outside the building as about 20 inside were removed from the rotunda. It wasn't immediately known if they would be charged by Montgomery police.
Associate Justice Douglas Johnston issued a statement saying he had proposed moving the monument to a private area of the judicial building after six o'clock this evening. He said that would avert any fines while Moore pursues appeals that could take months. But he said fewer than five of the justices concurred, and his proposal was not approved.
The associate justices have indicated they may take action later.

What would be your response to U.S. government court-enforced legislation requiring obedience on one of the Mosaic Ten Commandments? There are federal laws against killing the president.
No problem with that law.

States have no rights. X - Rights of the States under Constitution
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Come on, Luis - I understand your sentiments in this, but this is a Constitutional board.

The burning bush is, of course, written of in the Old Testament, hence pre-Christianity, and Jefferson's snickering at the thought is conjecture, nothing more.
Deism is NOT a refutation of religion.

People forget that the incident was one in which Jesus was *sidestepping* an attempt by Pharisees to make him either a traitor to the Romans or to many Jewish followers, who declared Rome the 'enemy'. (eg Judas the zealot).
He didnt choose either path - "Give to Ceasar what is Caesar's, give to God what is God's."
Jesus' quip was a way to straddle the issue adroitly - hitting upon the basic truth in the process:
"Jesus was simply reinforcing the idea that we are all citizens on earth as well as heaven. "
Correct.

..read the article. That's what "reportedly" means, by the way, a reference to something "reported."
Ever hear of bail?

What if it conflicted with your understanding or application of the Commandment in some way?

Powers, not rights.
Powers are the antithesis of rights.

Judge Moore reportedly in handcuffs, when they attempted to stand up for their right to practice their religion freely without interference from the state. What is it with the hyperbole on this issue? I agree with sinkspur for a rare moment (waahll, we've agreed on other stuff over the years):
"You're making this up. Moore was on television, on Hannity and Colmes."

"...Congress shall make no law...prohibiting the free exercise..." of religion.... Constitution of the United Soviet Socialist Republic (1922-1991): "Article 124: In order to ensure to citizens freedom of conscience, the church in the U.S.S.R. is separated from the State, and the school from the church."

What if it conflicted with your understanding or application of the Commandment in some way? I like reality, not hypotheticals. Be more specific and more clear.

Render to Caesar what is Caesar's, render to God what is God's. Following this logic, render to the citizens what is theirs, in this situation, the right to ptactice their own religion.
It's a sad day when in the United States of America the phrase "freedom of religion" is interpreted as "freedom from religion."
To: BattleRoyale
Gee, Moses oughta have kept 'em in his back pocket on his cloak, then, huh?
BattleRoyale, your argument is one in which this does not follow that: if those folks' practice of religion included the display of the Ten Commandments, the US Constitution is clear that the Congress shall not prohibit them from doing so.

Thank you for your comments. If you have seen the movie "The Miracle Maker" (I'd recommend it), their treatement of this scene is very interesting. Jesus almost mocks the Pharisees with his answer in the movie.
