I used to be just like you...until I lost my job almost a year ago, and can't find another. ...Long term unemployment causes one to check one's premises. Snoper: Good for you! Maybe, then, someday you can be like me! I went through a "long term" dry spell until I found a new "premise" that made me invaluable to me current employer. If that fails, I'll do it again.
Not being able to find a situation you WANT is one thing, but not accepting the responsibility of adapting in a cold capitalistic market do find SOMETHING to employ you is shameful. There are jobs that pay more than surfing FR, even if they're not in your chosen field. I'll be branded as hateful and mean, but if you want cheering for refusing to take jobs that are "below you," well you can always find plenty of sympathy over at DU.

But you are right, you can tell the Freepers with jobs from the jobless, generally. The jobless personalize every single news item on the economy. So with every silver lining, there are several helpful Freepers ready to point out their own personal cloud.

Since when did walmart have US suppliers? And what's that to do with seedcorn? We have to make chintzy products ourselves? We can't just retail them? Why not? I my own corporation, and am doing very well. Nevertheless, it has been said:
There are only 3 ways to CREATE wealth - Manufacturing, Farming or Mining. Everything else feeds off of these activities.
Watching the drain of manufacturing jobs from our economy is very disconcerting, but also consider the reasons why:
1. Excessive, needless regulation, think OSHA, EPA, etc. 2. Labor costs compared to China - often 1/100 of ours 3. Difficulty finding people who will work these jobs at $8-12 and hour.
We may wake up one day to realize we can't make anything anymore!

Probably the best over all day for at least 14 months, since right before Jeffords came out of the closet and became a pet Rat for Da$$hole.
After becoming bondless in our mutual funds, our old and new funds last week had made up for the losses from the middle of June to the first part of August.
This has to be a deadly curse on those who pray that our markets crash to make President Bush look bad. These have to be the most mentally ill of all.

You make excellent points. I recommend for anyone to read "The Death of Common Sense" by Howard James. He points out that the regulation by government is the single-biggest obstruction to business that there is.

I lived in my car for three weeks once.
But I am a man, and clawed my way out of it. No government help.
But hey, not everyone can do that. Some would rather post on FR.

Fortunately, I was never reduced (yet) to living in my car, but I did work my way through college, often working 2 jobs, and I was in the AF Reserves as well. I lived in some ratty (and roachy) places in those days, but Jesus gave me enough sense to persevere - and it was well worth it.
While not knowing everyone's situation, it seems that of those I am familiar with, the louder they complain, the less they are willing to work themselves out of it, and the more they want a hand-out from someone.
Of course, not all are like that, just in my experience most are.

Funny thing recently everyone Iknew who had lost their jobs just got hired. I always chuckle (under my breath) when I hear the President talking about the economy say: "Everyone who wants a job should be able to find one."
I think everyone you know who lost a job...wanted another one ;^)
