I think we need to remember what Drudge currently has on his website:
"18:01:48 ET // WHERE IS BUSH? President in motorcade, driving from Miramar, CA to Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego for a fund-raiser. He's scheduled to pull up at the Hyatt at 6:25 p.m. ET // White House source says that if he is to say anything about the power outage, it will be at the fund-raiser, where he is expected to speak at 9:30 pm. ET... Developing... "

I heard that too. One problem, though--there have been no thunderstorms across New York this afternoon.

They could have just come out and said "We don't know yet, we're looking into it". It's irresponsible to come out and immediately say "it's not terrorism" when they couldn't possibly know at that point. They did the same thing with the Anthrax attacks in Florida Yep, and the did the same thing on July 4 of last year when an Arab shot up a bunch of folks at LAX. .....and they did the same thing on 11/12/01 when Flight 587's engines fell off shortly after takeoff (from "turbulence" presumably). In both cases, they were 100% sure it wasn't terrorism just a mere few minutes after the incidents. Very irresponsible.

Anyone see the CNN video of a reporter yanked off of a public pay phone? She was reporting in using the phone and asking stupid questions. This PO'd people waiting to use the phone so the crowd yanked her off. I heard about it on other boards. CNN has the link to the video on their website but want people to pay to see it.

Tha could be. I'm a paleo in many, many ways including ownership of a 1930's dial phone (always works in power failures).
The computer is something that was forced on me.

Canadian gov. saying it was lightning in U. S. (Niagara) that caused the power outage.

Heat lightning? More common out west is my understanding.

All plants are in a safe condition, using their emergency diesel generators where appropriate"

I hope it stays that way. Thanks for posting it.

These outages didn't happen when SADDAM was in power!
To: Trivista
A little thing like 9/11 happened right after that speech in June. Also, Congress refused to act at the time.

Well, if the lightnung knocked the plant off line, capacity was maxed out and the load factors went too high, couldn't that have caused a domino effect along the grid? Though Gov. Pataki said he didn't this was caused by a capacity problem.

That's what happened in Howell.
East Ingham(Okemos Eastward), Livingston, Northernmost Washtenaw, and Jackson) seem to escape this considering it's surrounded(from what I can tell from the boards and WWJ).

My favorite Bloomberg comment: he said they're setting up emergency shelters, and they'll have that info up on their website. For what it's worth, the site is live and does have a tiny bit of information on it. Nothing anyone with a brain couldn't figure out for themselves though ("Drink lots of water!" etc.)
Of course, this doesn't make Bloomie any less of a tool....

Remarks by Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge to the Electronics Industries Alliance
Grand Hyatt Hotel Washington, D.C.
GOVERNOR RIDGE:
"Terrorists can sit at one computer connected to one network and can create worldwide havoc -- don't necessarily need bomb or explosives to cripple a sector of the economy, or shutdown a power grid. All a terrorist needs is a weapons of mass destruction."

PMSNBC just reported it. Says they are being told by the Canadian Prime Minister's office that "a lightning strike at a Niagra power plant caused the chain reaction outage". I guess the squirrel was spared .. PETA will be happy
