In a Snap, Extinct a Cat Comes Back to Life

A wild cat thought to be virtually extinct has been captured on film in the wild, a Malaysian scientist said Thursday.

"We have discovered a species thought extinct in Borneo," Mohd Azlan told Reuters by telephone from East Malaysia, where he led a research project for University Malaysia Sarawak and the state forest department.

A Borneo bay cat (Catopuma badia), about the size of a large domestic cat though with an extra long tail, triggered a remote camera in daylight on June 27, yielding a lone image from what was a two-month monitoring period.

Azlan, who previously tracked tigers in Peninsular Malaysia using so-called camera traps, said the data suggested there were at most a few of the animals in the area of the Lanjak-Entimau Wildlife Sanctuary under study.

"In up to two months of camera tracking, we got a single photo, which means it must be low in abundance or density."

The sanctuary, a tropical rainforest area closed to the public and adjoining a sister park across the border in Indonesia's Kalimantan, is home to orangutans, Bornean gibbons and hundreds of tree species.

Azlan said his project was seeking funds and support from international donors for more research into the bay cat, only seven specimens of which have been documented -- the last in 1992.

Basic info on how to post a image:

1. Write: <IMG SRC="image.gif">

2. In the "image.gif" type in the image's location

Not sure what "image's location" is?
Click on the image and then click on "open this image" or "view image" or similar phrase.
What you'll see in the location bar is (of course!) the location! :-)

3. Post!
(HOWEVER, that is not all that should be said about the matter. First off, people who do post graphics should use the HEIGHT and WIDTH attributes when posting their images. I can tell you more on that later, if you like.)
Important info on bandwidth, bandwidth theft, remote loading and file sharing...... Some times known as"Why is there a red X on my picture?"
Before posting pictures save gifs and jpgs to your own server.
Please don't grab other's pictures and use their bandwidth. Again, before posting pictures, save gifs and jpgs to your own server.

Right. The picture was up earlier, but it can not be linked. In any case, if you read post 1 it would be pretty evident that you were not telling me anything I didn't already know. Thanks again. Good luck with your teaching career.

Part of the information was to najida: "Yeah, yeah, I am HTML challenged (on this board) What the HECK am I doin' wrong???"

The remote linking part was to you.
If you down load the image to your own server, you'll be able to see it.

I sincerely apologise if it appeared that I had the wrong attitude.

Truly, the "feel good" story of the year.

I sense some empathy there, "extinction" and all.
