I tend to agree with you -- this seems the most logical thing for Davis to do -- that way he isn't leaving it to the courts as to whether or not he should be able to be on the ballot if the recall vote succeeds. He resigns in time to meet the registration deadline of tomorrow or the next day.

I don't know if there's any point in him trying not to infuriate the left. Nobody on the left will vote for him anyway.

No, that's not what I meant. The recall against Davis will succeed as long as most of the voters who really care want him recalled. That's obvious, of course, but what we don't want to do in this election is inspire the left to come out and defend Davis because they fear a candidate who wants to repeal the environmental wackiness might actually be elected.

Solving California's energy problems will require exactly that, but in this crazy, short campaign, substantive discussion of issues won't really occur. I don't expect to see televised debates with real questions.

For a Republican to win this election, it's important to have depressed Democrat turnout, so a winning strategy will involve dissing Davis, but not the Democrats or their core beliefs, at least not to the point where you infuriate them.

That's what I meant by that particular comment.
