In a short race with hundreds of candidates name ID is much more important than in normal elections. The two goals of campaigns are to increase name recognition and get the message across. With two month and a crowded field there's not a lot of time for either, with Arnold's celebrity he's garaunteed a lot of free face time (like bieng on Leno last night) which only makes it easier for him.

IMHO, I'd rather Arnold lose, not that I actually care who's governor in California, but if Arnold wins Conan the King will doubtless be shelved again and I've been jonesing for that movie for a long time.

You misunderstand the dynamics of a race like this.

Turning out your voters is the key here, and no one is better equiped to do it then conservatives, if they will quit being defeatist idiots and get off their *sses and do it.
