Southerners Know How to React

Watch out who you call a nasty name - he might be a Southerner, and y'all will be in a heap o' trouble.

Southerners, it seems, are brimming over with cortisone and testosterone, and they tend to be quick on the trigger. That's according to eggheads at the University of Michigan, where shrinks wandered down corridors bumping into students and calling them names.

Students from the South reacted far more violently and aggressively than those from the North, and "in tests regularly suggested more belligerent solutions to problems," writes Britain's Spectator magazine.

At the root of it all is the nearly vanished concept of honor, which appears to be thriving south of the Mason-Dixon line.

The Michigan experiments demonstrated that Southerners "retain two vital aspects of the old honour system: a high degree of sensitivity to insults and a tendency to respond with violence and aggression," according to Spectator.

That sounds reasonable - except how does it explain Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Edwards and Jimmy Carter?

This is the truth. In many southern towns, if you
look on the courthouse lawn and you see cannons,
they are still pointed North!

probably due to an inferiority complex.

More like we resent Northern smugness and assumed moral superiority and have since Cotton Mather pounded the pulpit. We think Yankees resent our regional cohesiveness, chauvanism and having the prettiest and most charming women.

Funny episode. The cows and other animals killed off all his crop because they got addicted to the nicotine. They had bloodshot eyes while they cornered Homer in his cabin.

and the people still pee in the street.

That still happens in the "first class cities" of Europe.

This is hardly a competition. It's a discussion by our standards, however you should not have been cursed at regardless of your snottiness.

As I have already stated, there are things I like about NYC and Boston too but now with 4 children I prefer here, it's simply easier and the culture is more to my liking....the manners as well.

The streets are packed after 7:00 p.m. in NYC, Chicago, and Boston because we work 12 to 15 hours a day or more and want something to do when we are done.

Sounds like quite the life.

If you happen to be a crossdressing stockbroker with social adjustment problems from a disfunctional family...

You're under arrest for Sec.3643; Subsection B; to wit: Regionalism, a hate crime.

Can't we all just get along?

Do the research - violent crimes in the NE are over twice as high as the South. Source file: FBI 2002.

When I clicked your link I got the dreaded "Page cannot be found" message.

I consider myself Southern, at least a little because I was born in Virginia, but my wife is a Yankee from up Connecticut way. There are things I like about both north and south:

North: New York Pizza and Hot Sausage, Deli's, (dang, I'm gettin hungry!), snow, and a lot of nice brooks to fish in (CT).

South: Buttermilk Pancakes, Complete Strangers Who Are Friendly, Great Big Bass Lakes, and most of all TEXAS (course, Texas really belongs in its own category)

I think that would probably be an overall Celtic trait. The English/French/German/Irish/Scottish people tend to be a mite bloodthirsty at times.

But I did find this:

FBI Crime Statistics The most recent nationwide FBI Crime Statistics ranks New York City ranks 160th in crime out of 205 American cities, making it the safest city with a population of over 1 million people in America. When the report was released, Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani congratulated Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, the men and women of the New York City Police Department, and community members for continuing to reduce crime in New York City. New crime statistics comparing January to June 2000 to a comparable time in 1999 released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in its Uniform Crime Report show that total index crime fell 0.3% nationwide between January and June 2000, while New York City’s decline was 5.7%. In the Northeast region as a whole, crime declined by 1.2% over the same period. “Every year we face the same skepticism,” Mayor Giuliani said. “People say it’s impossible to reduce crime any further after having already reduced it so much. And every year, the men and women of the NYPD prove the skeptics wrong.” “The continuing reductions in crime reflected in this latest FBI study reaffirm what many have come to expect of the NYPD-it is simply the best law enforcement agency in the country,” Police Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik said. “I also want to congratulate the men and women of the Department for their continuing dedication and performance.” The FBI’s UCR also shows that among the eight cities with populations greater than one million surveyed by the FBI (Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, and San Diego) New York City continues to show the lowest crime rate. Among the 205 American cities with populations over 100,000, New York City ranks 160th in total crime. The FBI’s report is comprised of crime data from jurisdictions with populations of over 100,000 for the first half of calendar year 2000, with the number of cities reporting varying slightly from year to year. Specifically, New York City continues to be safer than cities such as St. Louis (which has the highest crime rate in the nation), Atlanta (which ranks 2nd), Orlando (3rd), Dallas (13th), Phoenix (38th), Houston (60th), San Antonio (63rd), Philadelphia (82nd), Boston (96th), San Francisco (113th), Los Angeles (135th), and San Diego (157th). The report also shows that over the same period New York City posted the largest crime decline of the seven cities in New York State with populations over 100,000. In fact, of the other six cities – Albany, Amherst, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Yonkers, only Yonkers experienced a decline, of 3.7%. In addition, among these seven cities, New York City is the third safest, with only Yonkers and Amherst having lower per capita crime rates.

Well, that's just it, we wouldn't do that. It would be rude. But it happens to be the main reason we don't like Yankees.

What a totally RUDE stereotype!

Are some southerners ignorant and lazy? Yes --- and so are some northerners. Are some northerners rude and condescending? Yes, and so are some southerners.

But I have been around enough to know that most people, wherever they happen to live, are pretty decent folks and to cast any group of millions of people as all having the same negative characteristics is either a sign of ignorance or xenophobia. Neither of those are very desirable traits. I hope you don’t pass them on.
