Agreed. The swamp needed to be drained. Nothing like 150,000 armed and angry U.S. troops on the border to calm things down a bit.

Instead, in the upcoming months — given the fact the new liberators are offering the gift of democracy, while the old murderers are offering more of the same death and mayhem — the attacks will taper off, the story about the Husseins' whereabouts will unfold, the mystery of the missing WMD will be solved, we will navigate through the uncharted waters of Iraqi reconstruction — and, once more, the present peddlers of gloom will be refuted.

Hanson is like Ralph Peters, always cuts to the quick with brilliant analysis.

To suggest that President Bush waged war on a mere possibility is to open up a huge can of worms. I mean, it's POSSIBLE that Hussein was going to send a suicide bomber anyday; it's also POSSIBLE that Great Britain would, or Belize. I would also wager that intel officials on 10 September 2001 would have rated as merely POSSIBLE (and not imminent) the liklihood of a terrorist attack the following day.

No, President Bush waged war because of an imminent threat.

But I would balance that criticism by noting the success Reagan did achieve in the forceful response in Libya which resulted from the nightclub bombing in Germany.

To which I would add the success of "accidentally" dropping a laser-guided bomb on the French Embassy compound in Libya, which "coincidentally" occurred only hours after the Froggies refused to allow our UK-based F-111's fly over France to reach Libya. I guess that the pilots were just too tired to accurately drop a laser-guided bomb, after having had to fly all the way around Spain and across the Med. Gee, what a terrible accident - NOT!

I would agree, though, that Reagan didn't respond forcefully enough in Lebanon, and that leaving was a HUGE mistake.

Another brilliant one by VDH.
President Bush is determined, thank God, to face this enemy down no matter what anyone thinks. He feels it is his mission. Sadly, the opponents of freedom are equally determined to undermine him by creating problems that don't exist.
He is quoted in Bush At War as saying that he has to change the way things had been handled in the past in regards to the terrorism threat.
For the sake of all of us, I hope those who seek his ruin are shown for the disingenous partisans they are.

Victor Davis Hanson. Everyone else seems to know who he is but this is the first time he's registered on me. What a cogent argument, I'll certainly keep an eye out for his work in future. Only cloud on the horizon of optimism he's drawn being, with major commitments in Europe, Japan, Afghanistan, Iraq and now Korea, mostly solo, how can the US keep it up, budget-wise? Thanks for the piece, Dennis, and thanks for the ping, Brian.
