I think there already is a 'Free Republic Air Force'; There used to be a lot of threads about planes towing Free Republic signs over various events, in Florida I think.

See:

2-A1E Skyraiders:
"WE WERE SOLDIERS"
"FLIGHT of the INTRUDER"

"WE WERE SOLDIERS" Sgt/Maj BASIL L. PLUMLEY parachuted with the 82nd Airborne into Nazi-Occupied France the night before the Normandy Invasion, possibly off of this very plane..?

Well yes, but I'm pretty sure I don't have a place to park it at this time.
Though it would make an interesting conversation piece.
First guy, "I own a Beeeeemer."
Second guy, 'Well I own a Hummer.'

Response to both, "That's nice yow two, but I own a Douglass DC3 circa WWII and.."

Maybe it can be a 'working museum piece' like some of the classic birds in the CAF, complete with write up on the specific plane?

I read in the local papers a few years ago about a couple of mahcine or auto parts companies that were using C-47s to transport parts around the state.

I swear I still see one flying over the cities from time to time.

The key to flying is to keep the clean side up and the noisy (sometimes pointy) end forward.

I was excited to see the direction of this discussion thread...For the past year I have kicked around the idea of a resort airline in the rocky mountain west.

With a dedicated annual funding source of $2 million, our region would fund a fleet of four DC-3s and, together with ticket sales, cover the costs associated with commercial gates at major airports, respectable pay for pilots and flight crews, and good food on board. We would fly direct to our three largest ski markets: Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, and hope to add Chicago and West Coast locations within two years.

I have several business associates here interested in helping to create the service. We believe the romantic image invoked by the DC-3 adds the extra marketing touch we need to convice people to fly direct. I am looking for guys and gals familiar with the airframe for advice and, potentially, to become members of this unique in-service air museum.

Please contact me through Free Republic with your interest.

You might try contacting someone at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo. They're big on restoring aircraft to flying condition and they already display a very nice WWII collection. They already have a DC-3, but it's displayed as a passenger plane. John Ellis and Sue Perish (sp?) used to be the driving force behind the museum, but they're both getting up there in age so they may have passed the mantle.
