In just 7 days (July 9th) the people of Iran are planning massive demonstrations events and strikes.
On this date, 4 years ago, the regime brutally attacked peaceful student demonstrators while in their dorms. The result was the loss of life and liberty of hundreds of students, many of which are still unaccounted for.
Once again, the regime has been threatening a major crackdown on the protesters. A major confrontation is just days away.
Iran is a country ready for a regime change. If you follow this thread you will witness, I believe, the transformation of a country. This daily thread provides a central place where those interested in the events in Iran can find the best news and commentary.
Please continue to post your news stories and comments to this thread.
Thanks for all the help.

FOX has done several stories now. Seems they've decided it's a story that can't be ignored anymore. I wish they'd do more, but anything's better than nothing.

I knew she was supposed to stay in France a few more years. Just wasn't sure about her status.
Thanks.
She's scarey.

Keeping writing FOX NEWS...
If enough of us continue to do so it produces results... we have seen it already.

"... Your post implies that these are the same students still at the university 25 yrs later." Well, if they're anything like American radicals...
To: DoctorZIn
Please keep up this important work. What can we do? Can we send money to an organization of your recommendation?

Internet access is restricted here and many political websites have been banned.
I have a list of such webpages which I got from a friend.
I can post to mates who request to prove this too!

Re #10
I would like to say that even those students who burnt your sacred flag, now are thinking the same as other Iranians that the hostage taking action was a mere mistake.
2nd point is, hostage taking of the US embassy staffs was forced by leftist fractions. That is what I can prove to any one who wants to know. I have seen many documents on that.
The terrorist group of MKO ( arrested in France last week ) was one of the leftist group who couraged the student to take the embassy staffs hostage and make a crisis.
We as Iranians who are famous to be hospitable to foreign guests, apologize on that action again!
But remember that, They cheated sensitive students and abused them too.
Last year, the security forces arrested one of the former hostage takers, ( Mr. Abdi ), who said that 74% of the Iranians want the relations with America to be restored again. One more thing must be added here that the atmosphere of the years 1979-1980 cant be compared with what we have now in Iran!
It is a big change in Iran after 1997 elections.

The Iranians are fighting for democracy. They're the good guys and deserves our support and prayers. Please, read up on this issue. Iranians support American ideas of freedom and democracy more than the average college professor. You are sooooooooo wrong that I don't know where to start...

Many students are in hunger strike situation and they dont eat or drink any thing. 4 of them are in critical conditions!

Dr. Zin,
Seven days before the Romanian dictator, Nicolae Ceausescu, was removed from power - he and his loathesome wife travelled to Iran to meet with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. They were both dead and the Romanian people were freed by Christmas 1989.
May history find a way to repeat itself and this time let the Iranian people be free.

From everything I've been reading, there are problems for minorities in both Turkey & Iraq. Turkey's population has seen a drop in Assyrians (one of the Chritian minorities) from over 50,000, to about 5000 in recent years, though I don't know exactly what the timeline of that reduction.
The Kurds make up about 10% of Turkey's population & a possible/probable attempt to seceed (due a lot to an old promise by the west, of the creation of an independant Kurdistan after WWI) by Turkey's Kurdish population played a major part in Turkey's concerns during the early, active days of Iraqi Freedom. Turkey's military build up on Iraq's border & their need for assurances by the US to prevent the Kurds from gaining control of northeren oil fields had to do with Turkey's fear of one it's own minority communities having a supporting state with resources right across their border.
Meanwhile, over in Iraq, the Kurds seem to be grabbing up Assyrian's land, destroying or converting churches to mosqes The Assyrian community were also protected by Operation Northern Watch, but now seem to have been put at risk from their freedom loving brothern, the Kurds. Further south, Christians have owned liquor stores, but some are being killed & others threatened by those who are acting against them citing Islamic law.
Turkey's kind of democacy seems to have a poor record in protecting their minorities rights, so I wouldn't use them as any sort of model. Also too, their military seems to be more than a little bit too independant from government control. When the military can override the government & negotiate seperately with foreign powers, I worry.

My heart is with you. Be well.

You make some good points I wasn't aware of. My friend, being from there originally, always puts a very positive spin on Turkey.
But maybe compared to the other Moslem nations it has come a long way because Islam is not the state religion. But of course it falls short of what we expect in a democray.
