ROSIE'S KIN FINDS HIS VOICE

June 11, 2003 -- ROSIE O'Donnell's gay brother, a freshman state legislator, threw a fit after an upstate Republican colleague spoke out against a "dignity for all students" bill that would bar harassment of gays on school grounds. "You keep your homophobia out of this chamber and you keep it out of this building and you keep it out of the government," Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell (D-Manhattan) declared. "We are here. We are your brothers and sisters. We deserve respect and we demand respect and we're going to get it." The Post's Kenneth Lovett reports it was one of the rare times O'Donnell, the first openly gay man in the Assembly, has spoken on the floor of the legislature since taking office in January. O'Donnell was livid over comments made by Assemblyman Daniel Hooker, who argued that it's better for children to get a consistent message that homosexuality is not OK. "Unless this bill is defeated, we have sacrificed our children's innocence on the altar of political correctness," Hooker concluded just before it passed 138-8.
