I recently saw a Canadian documentary on the Iranian Hostage Crisis and several of the hostages interviewed mentioned one of their own collaborating with the militant students (i.e. selling out the CIA operative, giving up info on the Marines, etc.). This was mentioned in the book "444 Days" which I read too long ago for my feeble brain to remember. Can anyone provide any further info? Details?? TIA.

Some of his former patrolmen are going on 3rd and 4th tours on the war on terror. I more respect for them.

What I've never understood was how he managed to turn a bad discharge from the army into a E-7.

A lot of this topic has been lost to the fog of history. The hostages are old...memories fail. But read the book 444 days and you'll know the truth.

On June 1, the Pentagon announced that 20 servicemen who were held hostage in Iran had been awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. The only former military hostage who did not receive a medal was Sergeant Subic. The Army said that he ''did not behave under stress the way noncommissioned officers are expected to act.''

Why is this still being discussed when it happen back in 1979? Obviously Subic has remained in the Army and has over 30 military honors, so whatever he did during that hostage crisis was for his country. If you see the pictures of him before/after/during the 444days, you will see how the press/media describes him is not accurate. Right now Subic has a job he enjoys as a Chief of Police, and he does a great job. He has a lot of support from the community that he serves and protects. By the way, the email provided above to contact him is not correct.

Do you look at other thing Subic is doing/ has done? That is his true character, if you knew him then you would know how sincere he is.

I do know Joe Subic and if he is doing or has done anything good it is only a ploy. Joe has never done anything good or bad unless it would benefit him. And he doesn't care who he hurts in the process.
What Subic did in Iran was nothing short of treason, he should at the very least be serving life in prison.

I have no idea why the man is still discussed. Maybe it is because he is considering running for a constitutional position in Florida. He has to swear to Protect and Defend the very thing he turned against. Who knows. Let me say this. I am one of those who knew NOTHING of his actions in Iran until after I worked with or for him as he may tell some. I spent time in Iraq with him and personally attended the trip to deliver school supplies you posted about earlier. I pulled security on top of a Humvee, guarding against IED's and car bombs so he could make the news. He was a total public relations thing he planned to use during his election campaign. That came from his own mouth.
Joseph Subic Jr. personally stabbed me in the back, played his games to manipulate others for his personal gain and lied to others about me and many others on my crew. It is my personal opinion and mine alone that he is a true scumbag, will always be a scumbag and I will join ANY campaign against his election.

Joe Subic's actions are indeed 25 years old, and yes, he was young and in a stressful situation. This was the sum of Mr. Subic's comments on page 602-603 of Mark Bowden's book Guests of the Ayatollah. Mr. Subic was interviewed by Bowden's friend, journalist Christina Asquinth in the summer of 2004. Subic said "he was a different man today than he was twenty-five years ago, and acknowledged that under duress he occassionally cooperated with his captors, but not to the extent some of his fellow captives have alleged, and no more, he says that did others."

That said, I believe his actions violated the Army Code of Conduct and the UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) and he should have been prosecuted by a military court-martial. Mr. Subic was a Military Police officer (MP) at the time and should have been well aware of the both the Code of Conduct and the UCMJ, since he was charged with enforcing them. In addition, it is a yearly requirement of all military personnel to undergo refresher training on the Code of Conduct and expected behaviors when detained, captured or held hostage.

One of the main tenets of the Code of Conduct is to refuse to accept favors from the enemy in return for individual and/or personal gain. If you read Bowden's book, it is readily apparent that Subic was granted special privileges and favors in return for his actions, which included disclosing sensitive information, such as who were the military attaches and who were the Farsi speakers (leading the hostage takers to conclude those fluent in Farsi were CIA operatives). I challenge anyone who feels I am too harsh on Joe Subic to read Bowden's book and decide for yourself if this man deserves to be either a police chief or a non-commissioned officer in the United States Army.

Lest you think I am too harsh, I would be more forgiving of Mr. Subic if he did not appear to be involved in some other questionable activities of more recent origin:

Many people have mentioned Mark Bowden's book. COL Charles Scott spoke at the Army HQ building where I work and mentioned many errors that were present in Bowden's book. His joke was that he told Bowden that he found 7 errors in the book to which Bowden replied "that's not bad," and Scott then told him he was only on page 12. COL Scott spoke of Subic and his actions. Soon after capture, Subic identified Scott as an Army intelligence officer who spoke Farsi. Someone mentioned that no one was hurt by Subic's actions, but in fact COL Scott was tortured and still suffers physically from the affects of it some 30+ years later. It was Subic's blatant collaboration with the terrorists/enemy that resulted in Scott's torture.

I have always been a good natured person concerning the Corps rivalry between Army grunts and Marines.I felt it was a good thing to have,making everyone try harder to excel.I have met many Marines,and this man is no Marine.As hard as it is to admit,my life was saved by a Marine.Screw him,and I have no clue as to why he is still in uniform.I still have one middle finger left.
