Rep. Roger Landry said that after his decade-long battle against cancer, he puts health concerns over personal freedoms cited by the bill's opponents.
''I don't think we're chipping away at people's rights as much as steering (CONTROLLING) them toward a more healthy lifestyle,'' said the Sanford Democrat.

Well, well; the chickens are coming home to roost. All progressive democrat (communists) are alike. This is the result of liberalism; first they destroyed the public schools and universities and brainwashed America's youth, now they move on to controlling the adults and worker's of America.

This is a sign that the end is near. So I'm going to max out my credit cards and eat more fatty foods. Smoke more, Drink more, and run with scissors. I think I'll even go out and look for someone to have a meaningless affair with. The sky is the limit. Sorry Shelion but this Smoke Nazi victory makes me madder than heck.

''We're tired of working in an environment that is not safe or healthy,'' said Rep. Leila Percy, a Phippsburg Democrat who works as a singer and bandleader in the haze of clubs that serve alcohol.
She shouldn't be moonlighting. It obviously affects her decision making in her day job.

It is my opinion that these laws i.e. smoking, cell phones, helmets, seat belts.. have more to do with the insurance lobby in this country. If the feds and states were so worried about our 'health' then what about the lack of security at our borders?? NOW that IS a huge health risk.. bombs, chemical & biologicals coming into this country thru Mexico or Canada!

Stupid people don't learn from history.

Lawmakers have become lawgivers in their own minds.

They need to be whacked-down a peg or two!

Many smokers will open speak-easys in their basements and have "some friends" over for a smoke and a beer.

The bar business will suffer greatly as these "clubs" begin to proliferate in New York City and in other stupid states.

The state site hasn't posted the vote yet, so it's too early to identify our enemies.

''We're tired of working in an environment that is not safe or healthy,'' said Rep. Leila Percy, a Phippsburg Democrat who works as a singer and bandleader in the haze of clubs that serve alcohol.

The funny thing is that Leila will no longer be able to find as much work and her side income will suffer due to the number of bar owners that will not be able to afford to hire a band. If I were a bar owner or in an association for bar owners, she would be blacklisted for this act of seizure of my personal property! Then she would no longer have to worry about "working" in a smokey environment.

Selfishness at its worst!

It's important legislation. We need our alchoholics dying of liver failure to not have complications due to emphyzema, lung cancer, or heart failure due to the evils of smoking.

Just too damn funny! If anyone wants proof that we are a society with no real problems to worry about, just consider what your legislators are busying themselves with?

Pathetic!

So one of their Reps is a nightclub act? Maybe she was too hung over to think straight when she made this statement.

Well Leila you probably won't have a job singing anymore soon so you won't have to worry about it.

First of all it is not illegal to smoke. Who's going to enforce it? I understand after 10 pm NYC smokers are lighting up in bars? A NYer correct me if I am wrong.

Smoking bans in 'private clubs' (VFW etc.)have been added in Florida. It won't be long...til it happens in Maine. Once you get that 'big toe of government in the door'..they will push it even wider.

Where Next?

Also if one cannot smoke in his or her workplace ..then who defines a workplace?

Self-employed (your home)? The 18-wheeler/delivery driver..Uncle Mike's little hole in the wall tv repair shop down the street('We Pickup and Deliver')..etc etc.

No one was smoking in bars/restaurants in Maine unless they sold 60% Booze..thus, a non smoker could go to a restaurant/bar/pub and have dinner with no worry of cigarette/cigar smoke prior to this law. The 'little local 'watering hole' business' guy is now effected.

Either they ban smoking or they don't, but they certainly cannot tell what bars can sell and cannot sell that is available on the market. This is beyond insane.

"''We're tired of working in an environment that is not safe or healthy,'' said Rep. Leila Percy, a Phippsburg Democrat who works as a singer and bandleader in the haze of clubs that serve alcohol. "

In the first place, what is a government official doing playing in a bar band? At her age, she should have known long ago when she first considered being a bar-singer, that clubs were smokey.

I played in clubs for years, and even some clubs in Maine, and the smokey atmosphere is just part of it. If it is that dangerous, or unpleasant, then find another gig.

Take another dangerous profession, say "skydiving". This bitch would probably say, "I'm tired of working so high above the ground where it's not safe or healthy...".

She bangs her toe with a hammer, and then bitches about it. Well she also has freedoms...the freedom to quit singing in bars. There are other places to sing...like CHURCH, for instance. Certainly she is making enough money with her gov't job that she doesn't need that pittance from smokey clubs.

If her throat is so "golden", why hasn't she made a record? Why is it that the smoking issue is the only issue where she can get some publicity? That's what this is about, mostly, EGO.

Why do the masses all have to bend over for the occasional, individual, cry-baby?

But, you know what...we CAN put a stop to it. The money trumps whacko liberals everytime. Just don't go to any clubs in Maine (or anywhere else) that don't allow smoking.

Imagine, just 10 years ago if someone said, "Oh, you can't smoke in bars". You would have said, "Whaaaaaaaaaat!

I hate to say it, MAINE, but you ain't no California. People aren't exactly clammering to live up there where there is winter 11 months out of the year. Now, it's a liberal stronghold, certainly no one wants to live in one of the Nazi states.

I smoked for over 20 years, it cost me some health issues, but IT WAS MY CHOICE. I no longer smoke, but I will defend to my death the right of a person to smoke if they want to. It's no different than any other risky behavior.

Why is it that no one is attacking drinking? Well, for one thing, look at the political contributions and you'll see that the beer, liquor and wine companies give a LOT of money to the Demoncraps.

Tobacco took it's original hit - not because of health issues (we've known about that since the 1930's), and it wasn't about the insurance companies...but it was about big tobacco supporting the Republicans. They donated some to the demoncRATS, but not much. So, during the term of the clintons, every big company who did not contribute to the left (i.e. tobacco, MicroSoft, etc) got drug through the mill.

The demoncRATS couldn't honestly solicit the funds from bit tobacco, so they EXTORTED it from them through the courts. The insurance companies merely saw a chance to hike some rates and get rid of high risks, so they chimed in too.

So, before the craziness of California, New York, and Maine filters (no pun intended) out to the rest of us, it's time to re-schedule your vacations and business dealings to states which still support the Constitution and personal freedoms.

Let the whacko's in Maine hear from you and ask them why Americans should have to give up their freedom just because some ego-driven person in their ranks wants to be a bar-fly finger.

Any federal dollars behind this?

For example, fed transportation $$$ threatened to be withheld from MA unless DUI alcohol level lowered to 0.08

Central Control (fedgov) has de facto control over all schools in US via fed funds. Unless state legislatures agree to pass legislation and regulate to conform with fed laws (School to Work, GOALS 2000, Safe Schools, etc.), fed ed funds are withheld.

Why not control more the same way????

''We're tired of working in an environment that is not safe or healthy,'' said Rep. Leila Percy

Wait - is Leila implying that bars are safe and healthy environments without the smoke?

Bwahahahahahahaha!

No wonder Maine has become so third world with brain trusters like this calling the shots.
