The kind of black candidate that many conservatives dream of has entered the Republican primary for Georgia's Senate seat in 2004.

Herman Cain is a pro-life Reaganite and the chairman of Godfather's Pizza chain. He took over management of the once-troubled company, making it a success and finally buying it for $50 million from Pillsbury in 1988.

Mr. Cain did not touch base with state party leaders, the National Republican Senatorial Committee or the party's real godfather, White House strategist Karl Rove, before jumping into the race.

I hate it when they play these games.

Mr. Cain enters a primary field that includes another black Republican, Atlanta businessman Al Bartell, who ran unsuccessfully for lieutenant governor last year

Why didn't he just back the guy already running and running with some name recognition? Is this going to split the black vote now, allowing the white guy to take it? Doesn't seem like a very smart political move but I know nothing about the politics in Georgia.

Rove should definatley get behind this guy, this guy could bring in centerists and moderates and independents to the party, nationally, very easily.

We're not going to get the black vote, but moderate whites become more inclined to vote republican when they seem trying to get the black vote, hence the real reason why Bush is always pushing for it.

The only reason that party isn't dead, is because Zell Miller, the crazy old fool that he is, makes himself seem like the ideal democrat, and many people think thats what mainstream democrats are like, they don't see that his views are pretty much republican, and he also campaigns and endorses dem canidates.

You are so right about the effect of a black Republican candidate on the vote. It will not draw an appreciable amount of black voters -- some, yes, but not enough to make much of a difference except in a very tight race. It will outrage many more black voters than it attracts, but those voters were never going to vote for you anyway.

What it will do is attract large numbers of squishy, feel-good moderates and liberals who will think themselves superior because they voted based on race.

The fact that Mr. Cain sounds like a great candidate is the main thing, but being black will get him this segment of the vote which is fairly elusive to a white, conservative, male.

Mr. Cain was actually considering running for POTUS the same year as W. He used to live in Omaha and he is a fantastic, motivational speaker. Used to see him at sporting events where he'd sing the national anthem. GOP would do well to get this man into the senate.

Expect the Democrats to pull out all the stops in trying to defeat Mr. Cain. Visible, articulate women and minorities with conservative views will kill the bellwether effect that keeps Democratic interest group voting blocs in line. Nothing else explains their campaign to the death to kill the Appeals Court nominations of Priscilla Owen and Miguel Estrada.

Actually, Cain's got more name recognition than Bartell locally (at least in the black community); there hasn't been much splash on either name at least in Atlanta. I'm not sure about the remainder of the state.
