[Israeli Security Minister] Hanegbi Promises Jewish Access To Temple Mount Soon
Israel National News (Arutz 7) ^ | May 14, 2003

(IsraelNN.com) Minister of Public Security Tzachi Hanegbi announced that in the very near future, Jews would be permitted access to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, to visit and pray, Israel Radio reported.

Hanegbi was quoted as saying if an agreement is not reached with the Islamic Waqf Authority, then the government would make a unilateral decision and take the necessary actions to prevent any violent response aimed at preventing the state from exercising its right to access the holy site.

What?! Jews praying at the holiest site in Judaism? Provocation!

This would be good for religious Jews (and I speak as the great-grandson of a famous Rabbi) but it also seems like a good way to start World War III.

So you think appeasement is a better idea? Keep the jews away from their holy sites to keep the peace?

Good G-D, what are you thinking.

I think it is pretty obvious that this could turn into the same type of situation that pertains in Ayodhya in India where a mob of Hindus destroyed an ancient mosque that they claimed was on the site of an even older Hindu temple. This is especially true since recent research indicates that the rock in the Dome of the Rock may have been the resting place of the Ark in the first temple. I'd like to see Jews be able to pray on the Temple Mount and I would like for it to be possible to do archaeological excavations there. But the Muslims have a case too. This is a very difficult problem to solve. Destroying the Dome of the Rock, which is of course the goal of many extremists, would not be an act intended to further world peace.

"This would be good for religious Jews (and I speak as the great-grandson of a famous Rabbi) but it also seems like a good way to start World War III."

Are you aware that pre-September 2000, the Temple Mount WAS accessible? I was there in 1997.

How about a compromise? Jews get renwed access to the Temple Mount, but will continue to stay away from the ancient Jewish nieghborhoods of Mecca.

If this comes to pass then I predict that within one year at least ONE of the major mosques will be blown up.

i will admit to being extreme - as well as intransigent - but as far as i'm concerned take out the dome - and anyone who has a problem with that

the maggots that have hijacked islam understand nothing but the iron fist of power - anything less only encourages them further

the israeli's have shown overwhelming patience and tolerance for the nest of vipers in their midst - let them handle the issue at hand without tying their hands and let the temple mount be open to prayers

and i too would enjoy seeing a proper archeologic inventory - but i'm pretty sure it's too late now because of the muslims well-known unregulated and undocumented digging and destruction of israeli antiquitities - when the dome does come down it will probably be because of those illegal excavations

I was aware that Jews had had limited access in the past but have not followed the complete history. I remember the Goodman (and Goldstein) shootings. Obviously there must have been some restrictions or Ariel Sharon could have just dropped in without causing a fuss. If there was a way to ensure that no troublemakers entered the Plaza, that would be fine. But the people who want to begin the rebuilding of the Temple are getting more more reckless all the time.

When you went to the Temple Mount, were you questioned or searched?

The incident involving Goldstein was in Hebron.

I knew that (looked it up before my post) but it's generally indicative of the type of thing that could happen on the Temple Mount, even due to the actions of a single individual.

I hope this happens too. There is no reason to be intimidated by Palestinian threats. Jews have the right to pray there. It is an insult to Jews everywhere that the Israeli government cowtows to the PLO on this matter.

I look at reopening the Temple Mount as essentially "mind over matter". I don't mind what the Arab jihadists think of it, because their opinion does not matter.
