Nation of Islam leader’s son jailed

May 11, 2003

By Michael Puente / Post-Tribune staff writer

VALPARAISO — The 44-year-old son of Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan was arrested by the Indiana State Police following a hit-and-run incident early Saturday afternoon.

Nasir H. Farrakhan of the 4800 block of Woodlawn in Chicago was being held at the Porter County Jail here on probable cause for multiple charges resulting from the collision with another vehicle.

The probable cause charges are:

— Operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

— Driving with a suspended license.

— Leaving the scene of personal injury accident.

— Possession of drug paraphernalia.

As of 9 p.m. Saturday, a spokesman for the jail said Nasir Farrakhan was still in the jail and had yet to be processed.

It was unknown if and when Farrakhan would be bailing out of the jail. Although he will be allowed to post bail, the spokesman did not know the amount of the bail.

According to the state police, Farrakhan was driving his 4-door 1997 Hummer east on the Indiana Toll Road in LaPorte County.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Farrakhan struck the rear of a gold 2000 Honda passenger car driven by 73-year-old Charles Peterson of Gary.

State police reports that Farrakhan did not stop following the collision but allegedly fled the scene.

Farrakhan exited the Toll Road but was stopped by LaPorte County police.

Farrakhan was arrested on the various charges and transferred to the Porter County Jail.

A spokesman with the Indiana State Police Toll Road Division confirmed that Nasir Farrakhan was indeed the son of the famous minister.

The case was investigated by state police Troopers Mike Young and Pete Bradley, according to a report.

Peterson’s wife, Gladys, was taken to Porter Memorial Hospital here to be treated for neck and back pain.

Gladys Peterson, 62, was treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The Petersons could not be reached for comment.

State police report about $5,000 worth of damage to Petersons’ vehicle. Farrakhan’s vehicle did not sustain any noticeable damage.

Police report that the road condition at the time of the collision was dry.

Louis Farrakhan also could not be reached for comment.

A person who answered the phone at the Nation of Islam’s Mosque Maryam, the national headquarters for Louis Farrakhan, on Chicago’s South Side said there was no one there to comment.

And, the person said, everyone was “too busy” to be bothered.

According to FinalCall.com, the official Web site of the Nation of Islam, Louis Farrakhan is to be among family and friends tonight at the Chicago Hilton and Towers Hotel on Michigan Avenue to celebrate his 70th birthday.

Also, the celebration will be the unveiling of the Louis Farrakhan Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Nasir Farrakhan’s full name is Joshua Nasir Hussain Farrakhan. He is one of the nine children of Louis Farrakhan.

In August 2001, Nasir Farrakhan was shot twice in the legs by two men outside of a Chicago home.

A 35-year-old woman at that home in the 9900 block of South Forest Avenue was also beaten by the men, according to published reports.

Two men were eventually charged with the attack.

I can see it now. Being the wacky liberal/Islamofascist that he is, I'm sure his dad will cry about big whitey bringing him down. He hit somebody while drunk with a blunt in the ashtray, but he's a victim. Stand by.

Farrakhan's son is 44. I wonder what the cutoff date is for "youthful indescretions?"

The booze, drugs; heck, even the car that was rear-ended were all planted by a cabal of interests conspiring against the NOI...

In fact, I'm sure we can use Calypso Louie math to decipher the perpetrator's identity - just add up 777 (sure to be found on the bottle), the drug dealer's phone number and the license plate of the car... hmmmm....

I actually did search by title first, but then searched for "farrakhan" and "son", etc after. I've seen the "already posted" police in action before, so I am careful. But mistakes happen, yes?

If I remember correctly, the article posted 2 minutes after yours, which was probably why yours didn't show to me right away. Seeing the story probably was picked up by us both at nearly the same time stands to reason. It (searching by keyword) has worked for me before, no reason for it to not work again here and there. Not all articles are titled identically, as I am sure you know.

Relax, dupes aren't meant to step on toes. :) Hence my thanks for mhking alerting me to your original, and first post?

The two articles were actually posted less than five minutes apart - it's possible that the first one wasn't posted when the second one was started.

Given how the two posts were made within a couple of minutes of each other, it's entirely possible that even an appropriate method of searching would not have yielded any positive results.

My only purpose in responding initially was to point out how a simple search of keywords was not the best way to approach a search of this site to see if a specific article had been previously posted.

cgk's subsequent post made it clear that the method that would bear the most fruit had been utilized and that's great!

I didn't mean to come off as somehow offended, but rather, I was just ensuring that cgk knewof the best way to utilize FR's search feature for future reference.

Everyone knows Louie is a joke. Bennet purported himself to be a moralist but got caught being a hypocrite.
