Tom Fleming mentioned that idea the other day, but clearly, if Bush really does run a tight ship, Rummy will have to go. Tom Fleming? LOL!!
Powell will go before Rummy goes, and Powell ain't goin'.
Rummy doesn't coddle bad guys, which, of course, means you libertarians are afraid of losing all your icons.

The one who broke Bush's tight ship rule, yes. He will have to go.
Who would you side with Bush or Rummy?

Yes....he's actually foolish enough to be amusing. And instructive, too: if you ever need to learn how to write extensively about a subject without ever directly addressing and/or refuting the opposition's position, just read 5 or 6 of his articles."Stone Throwing, as a fine art."

Rummy broke the rules; how can you not support his ouster?

Neocon pit-bulls snarl at Syria: 'You're next!' The mad dogs of war, unleashed by George W. Bush, are baying and barking up a storm. I like the sound of that, it has a good ring to it. I take it as a compliment.
To: JohnGalt
The one who broke Bush's tight ship rule, yes. He will have to go. What did he do? Please provide a link to back up your statements.
Who would you side with Bush or Rummy?
I haven't seen or heard the President criticize or otherwise express any reservations about Rumsfeld's actions. So, please provide evidence that such a rift exists between both men, who I admire.

He 'okayed' a verbal attack on the President. Maybe you heard about Newt Gingrich, a member of Rummy's Defense Policy Board, speech in front of AEI two weeks ago?
If you actually believe that Newt's words were directed at members of the state department, we can cease this conversation, if not, I would be happy to supply the links to stories reported by the Neoconservative American Spectator and several other sources.

If you actually believe that Newt's words were directed at members of the state department, Newt's a free agent. I have NO DOUBT that Newt's words were entirely his own. He's proved in the past that his political acumen is questionable.
Sure, Newt was taking a shot at Powell, but Powell's done a good job of putting him back in his box.
Rumsfeld's not going anywhere, your orgasmic anticipation notwithstanding.

General Gingrich

NEWT BOMB
The White House is livid at former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich for his speech yesterday at the American Enterprise Institute in which he criticized the performance of Secretary of State Colin Powell. Gingrich, who sits on the Defense Advisory Board for the Bush administration, did not discuss his plans for the speech with the White House prior to releasing embargoed copies to various media outlets. Powell learned of the criticisms from reporters.
"Gingrich seems to think that because people at Fox News like to have him on that everybody wants to hear what he says about anything," says a White House political staffer. "But you'd think he would have learned from the last days of his House career to keep his mouth shut."
The White House is concerned that Gingrich's comments will be viewed by State Department senior staff as reflecting White House views, which could not be further from the truth. It is also concerned that Gingrich's comments will embolden already hawkish Defense Department staff, heightening tensions between two cabinet offices that have had strained but cordial relations for months.
Did Gingrich get nod for AEI speech?
http://www.hillnews.com/news/043003/gingrich.aspx Jack Kemp: Newt 'the bull' Gingrich
http://www.townhall.com/columnists/jackkemp/jk20030430.shtml From Tom Fleming:
Gingrichs irresponsible and disloyal diatribe was widely interpreted, and quite properly, as an attack on President Bush, who signed on to Powells unsuccessful attempt to co-opt the United Nations. I am surprised that the Neoconservatives, always eager to brand President Bushs critics as traitors, have not gone after Secretary Rumsfeld. Surely, it is not because they believe the rumors that Rumsfeld has not had a thought in ten years, unless it has been planted in him by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz?
Donald Rumsfeld is one of the sharpest men to sit in a Republican cabinet in recent decades. He is politically astute enough to have seized control of this countrys foreign and defense establishment, and his caustic tongue, informed by a ready wit, has overawed the nations non-too intelligent press. Unfortunately, in his old age, he has forgotten how to think for himself, and, even more unfortunately, his all-consuming vanity has made him impervious to reality. Some day President Bush may realize to his cost the mistake he has made in delegating too much power to an ambitious subordinate. If either had studied Roman history, they might recall the fate of Tiberius chief minister, Sejanus.
There is, however, an example closer to home: Lincolns Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. Stanton was a holdover in Andrew Johnsons cabinet, and he conspired with radical Republicans in Congress against his own President. Stanton thought he was invulnerable, and, when his President dismissed him, he and the radicals arranged for his impeachment. When Johnson was acquitted, Stanton resigned, fixing the principle that an American President is free to hire and fire members of his own cabinet. George Bush, if he could be made to understand that he has been insulted by his own Defense Secretary, could replace Don Rumsfeld with the stroke of a pen. It is not too early for him to start thinking of a successor.

37 has some links.
I think the prospects are better than I thought if 'there goes Newt again' is the defense the Hawks are going to offer.
I think Rummy will retire with 'health issues' if this disloyal rift can be exploited.
