Coretta Scott King debuts makeover Monday on 'Oprah'

After 40 years with the same familiar look, Coretta Scott King has gotten a makeover -- and it's making its debut Monday in front of millions of TV viewers.

The 76-year-old widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King recently ran into Oprah Winfrey. Her old friend suggested that King be a part of her "age-defying makeover" show, airing Monday.

"Oprah did have to convince Coretta to be on the show," said a spokeswoman from Harpo Productions, which produces the hit show. "That in itself was a pretty big accomplishment."

But Winfrey was game for the challenge. "Even living legends need to spice it up every decade or so," she said on the show.

The talk show host pulled together an all-star team to give King her new look. Winfrey enlisted her own hairstylist, Andre Walker, and makeup guy, Reggie Wells, to work their magic. Then one of her favorite fashion designers, Bradley Bayou, dressed King in a cool black pantsuit.

King's hair color remains the same but it is slightly shorter, with a nice bounce. "It's also sleek and shiny," said the spokeswoman.

King was traveling on Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Winfrey wanted so much for King to love her makeover.

"I was up last night worried sick about today's show," she said at the beginning of the show, taped April 23.

But Winfrey didn't have to fret. Asked how she liked her new look, King replied on the show: "I feel great."

King's assistant of 20 years, Lynn Cothren, was more vocal during the taping. "She's always been beautiful, but now she looked younger and fresh," said Cothren of his boss.

Oprah agreed. On the show, she said to the designer Bradley: "This is fabulous!"

Others participants included Gayle King, Oprah's best friend, who assembled a team to make over her sister Caryn. The model Iman and actress Victoria Principal had teams in place to make over Oprah viewers.

"The Oprah Winfrey Show" airs Monday at 4 p.m. on WSB-TV.

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

I believe the first female millionaire that actually earned the million, was a black that started some hair products
company targeted at blacks.

Latter part of the Nineteenth century, as I recall.

I wonder what the millionairess's opinion of the income tax be? The same as the "Professional Black Widow"'s opinion?

Last time I checked, her sole claim to fame was being a world-class cuckold.

Poor Caryn - to have needed an entire makeover team! (BTW, does Gayle King's resume read: "1985-present Oprah Winfrey's best friend" ?)

Well, I think it's interesting. Maybe I'm just shallow, but I also thought Coretta needed to come into the 21st Century. I'll be watching.

I want on the list king ;) Also I am looking forward to this show. One of my biggest regrets in life was not having the bus fare to go to Alabama and march with Dr. King. The man and Coretta have had a big part of my heart and influenced me, while the libs were entranced with the Kennedys. The only bad thing about Dr. King was Jessie Jackson.
