Ex-president Bill Clinton predicted this week that either Communist China, which helped bankroll his 1996 reelection campaign with hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal contributions, or the European Union, would replace the United States as the world's number one power within the next 30 years.
"In all probability, we won't be the premier political and economic power we are now," Clinton told the Washington Post in an interview from Mexico on Thursday. Saying the shift would occur within "a few decades," the ex-president cited the growth of China's economy and Europe's already formidable economy as factors that would doom continued U.S. supremacy.
Clinton said the question of whether China or Europe would replace the United States depended on how their respective governments invested in military might. While Europe's defense investment has been minimal since World War II, China now has the fastest growing military budget in the world.
In 1996, the Clinton administration approved the transfer to Beijing of key missile guidance technology which enabled China to hit most major U.S. cities with its intercontinental ballistic missile fleet.
Clinton offered his prediction to the Post in an attempt to clarify comments he made to an Australian audience in February, where he warned "This is a unique moment in U.S. history, a brief moment in history, when the U.S. has preeminent military, economic and political power. It won't last forever. This is just a period, a few decades this will last."

Cool. Say hello to the guys on the Hale Bopp for us.
To be honest, you make no sense. You assoicate things that may or may not be associated and provide no justification for association.
The only reason they have any positive productivity at all is because the glom all over our advances. It's relatively easy playing "follow the leader."
What I care about most, however, is not that the US endures but that its ideals endure. If China or Europe do gain ascendancy, it will only be sustainable if they adopt the same ideas of freedom and liberty that have made America great.
Your asaserted youth does little to hide your brilliance, Joe. Nothing trumps liberty. NOTHING.
I volunteer to apply the "Thank you sir, may I have another," paddle to his most deserving posterior as he "Monicas" you rump.
I have read about China as a source of epidemics and various diseases. Can't refute that. But their population has continued to grow and the potential for economic is tremendous.
My point is not that they don't need freedom, it's how will freedom come. I contend that economics can be the driving force.
By all means continue all you want.
Uh no!
You misunderstand when I say manage the economy. I mean they will fail if they make stupid decisions and hinder the development of capitalism. I cited capitalism earlier and I mean that in the truest meaning, not that the government would be pulling all the strings. You've heard that he manages best who manages least?
I believe the full and complete rationale that Clinton possessed above average intelligence is that, it was alleged, he occasionally completed the New Your Times Sunday crossward puzzle.
And as soon as they adopt one they will become an obese Canada.
Oh, and I suppose you are angry at Clinton for giving away national secrets, blabbermouth! 8^)
Chinese studies if I am not mistaken has much more to do with arts, and literature, but rarely goes into economics, especially current economics....
I don't have time to waste on your confused reply, but I would suggest you learn some manners.
If it's any consolaton, I read the reply twice. Once in post #97, and once now. It still make no sense.
Former monarchists have difficulty becoming anything other that socialists. They believe the rulers should look after the peasants. Very difficult for them to compete.
It is wholly offensive to me as an American, that this Sociopathic person continues to speak out about how America is going down the drain. How many times has he said similar statements in Speeches and Interviews since he left office? 20? 25? 30?

Hmmm, why would he have to clarify those comments? It's obvious he believes this, and he has also sold out American interests through the Loral/Ron Brown/Chinese transfer of Technology and the Indonesian Coal Deal for starters. Traitorous actions deserve serious consequences, and I am confident that somehow, someway, The Skunk will be held accountable for his Mis-Leadership and Treacherous actions against America before he assumes room temperature in his later years.Perhaps in his second term, George W. Bush will allow the facts to be brought to the forefront to unravel before a stunned Americans eyes.Well, I can dream can't I???
One Anecdote. Her father and I visited her in New Haven on our way to work in New Hampshire. I slept in her office. I wanted to read a book or magazine to fall asleep and they were all in Chinese, LOL!
