U.S. troops to be pulled out of Germany
Rumsfeld indicates U.S. troops to be pulled out of Germany
U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has been visting Iraq this Wednesday. Following a stop in the southern city of Basra, Rumsfeld moved onto the capital, Baghdad. He met with the U.S. appointed administrator for Iraq, Jay Garner.
Later, he spoke to U.S. soldiers at Baghdad's airport. Asked about rumours that Washington was planning to pull troops out of Germany, Rumsfeld indicated that the rumours were true, but that the details had not yet been worked out.
Those comments came one day after Rumsfeld announced that U.S. troops were pulling out of Saudi Arabia.

Well I hope my old unit stationed there is not going to get deactivated. If it does I will make the trip to Germany to see the ceremony.

We need zero European bases. I hear many parts of the States are also lovely this time of year.

Better not be an outcry.
This is not an entitlement program - it's a matter of national security.

All US troops or some US troops?"
Let's say an overwhelming majority.

Do you know if the 317 Combat Engineering group
will pull out? My late husband served with them
in 1955. We lived in Hoechst.

Let's say an overwhelming majority. Works for me.

Not sure, the details have not been worked out. If it is not a move to another country then a number of units are going to get deactivated. I will keep you posted if I hear of anything.
To: Calpernia
I've noted their presence at Dulles International.

I suggest we send them to Berkeley, CA, and Madison, WI, for another Shock and Awe campaign.

Heard that some of them are going to Italy. They're going to Hungary, Poland, Romania and Bulgaria.
GIs moving from Germany to new Eastern Europe bases
We should be bring 'em home.
Instead, U.S. taxpayers get the "opportunity" of subsidizing the economies of a different European region by building new military bases.

Warrant Officers and senior NCOs who married Germany women, raised their children in German schools, and are hardly distinguishable from German citizens when they are not in uniform. They are still Americans, and although I'm sure you're right, it's time for this move regardless. Germany obviously no longer needs nor wants our protection. It seems they are more interested in creating a new force with their (invaders-oops)allies the French, so as to oppose US interests.
