The Bush administration is bucking the National Rifle Association and supporting a renewal of the assault weapons ban, set to expire just before the presidential election. "The president supports the current law, and he supports reauthorization of the current law," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told Knight Ridder.
Tossing out the ban on semiautomatic weapons is a top priority of the NRA. Bush said during his presidential campaign that he supported the ban, but it was less clear whether he would support an extension.

Good point. Thanks for giving me some facts that I didn't have. Please see my post #135. While it's a reply to another poster, it also applies to you.
How's your school year going?

I hate to say it, but this asshole just lost my vote. I'll stay home. When the god damn republicans are acting like Rats, there's no reason to vote.

We don't get a president we agree with all the time, even Reagan. Sometimes we just have to hold our nose.

He MUST be re-elected. He's doing what he thinks he has to do to achieve that. I dont like it either, but the alternative makes me shudder.
He cant do it alone. He needs more seats in congress.
Again, we can keep the bill off of his desk.

Well, if we all stand together in the unconstitutional basket, the bottom is going to fall out.

No, here comes the people who have fought for and swore to uphold and defend the constitution of these United States against all enemies foreign AND Domestic.
Bush just became an enemy of MY constitution, the very constitution he swore and I swore, to uphold and defend.

How long until the bots come and start posting that this is all part of some "brilliant plan" by Bush?I don't know but the President will be getting a letter from me. One need look no farther than Iraq to see the devastating effect of a disarmed populace. People were being shot in the back and recieved mortar fire as they tried to surrender to British soldiers in Basrah. Had they been armed, they at least could have fired back. The commoners were sitting ducks while the "right people" fired on them at will.

This is not come brilliant plan.
This Bush Bot thinks it is a stupid loyalty to his father who signed the original.
I wonder if there is any hope in the Senate of bottling the reauthorization up in comittee?

Hey, you're the only person on this thread actually advocating anything really productive. Stop it this instant!

When the GOP is in office, they go back to sleep, and we get huge budget increases, important legislative initiatives defeated, and half of the GOP celebrating it.I knew a man, founder of the TRT, who claimed that if Bush was elected the conservative cause, in particular the pro 2nd cause, would be lost or forgotten; that opposition ot socialism would be finished.
You seem to be suggesting that he was right.

"Bush cannot afford to Pi$$ off 5 million voting NRA members. I can't even remember the times I've heard NRA members say they have no desire or need for assault weapons, that they support a total ban on them. After all, "who needs an AK to hunt deer?"
Unless things get really bad, Bush will carry enough popularity into 2004 to win regardless of how I vote. If he signs an extension on the AWB, I'll either not vote at all or vote Libertarian.

This bill will never reach Bush's Desk, and even if it did he knows better than to be another one term embarassment.
To: The Coopster
I certainly feel your pain, to some extent.I feel yours, too, but we need to show a little backbone, and I daresay, a little self-respect with regard to the GOP. They need to know that they can't just walk all over us just because we know that the alternative would be worse. That's blackmail, plain and simple. By accepting it, we're acknowledging that they control us, rather than the other way around.
Real tyranny is tyranny over the mind. It's OK if we have bad rulers if we know we're willing to stand up to them every inch of the way. But when we welcome usurpers, we lose our ability to even know what freedom is. We're making a big mistake if we assume that the GOP will fight for our freedom. Only we can do that for ourselves.
