Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help! If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

> ... get "Baghdad Bob" his own talk show ...
Muhammad Said Kazim al-Sahhaf (Baghdad Bob) is apparently
#31 on the top-50 list of most-wanted Iraqis.
http://www.angelfire.com/ultra/terroristscorecard/index2.html That also means he's in the "40 Thieves" list of people the
Coaltion intends to prosecute for war crimes or crimes
against humanity if we capture him. if the Iraqi people get
to him first, they may run him up a flagpole and see who
salutes.
Heck, it now appears that the lies were also going up and
down the chain of command inside the Iraqi military. There
are more than a few officers who'd like to have a word with
'ol Bob.
He won't be given his own PBS talk show anytime soon.

re: the photo of damage at Palestine Hotel--No, it doesn't look like that would be from a tank, but I'm no expert on weapons!
Just seems that tank fire would do more damage than that.
And no, it doesn't look like it went inside the room, but wasn't the guy standing on the balcony? Maybe I'm misremembering, though.

I would still like some elected official -- representative, senator, or official of the administration -- ANYBODY with official status -- to publicly denounce Blix as an incompetent, meddling socialist and duplicitous liar.
ANYBODY WITH OFFICIAL STATUS. ANYBODY.

That's about right but it doesn't mean it was on purpose or that the tank wasn't receiving incoming. It's a battle. Reporters need to know that.

if the Iraqi people get to him first, they may run him up a flagpole Are you sure you dont have this backwards? Something like:
"If the Iraqi people get to him first, they may run a flagpole up him.

Major Bob alert!

I think it's pathetic that we haven't caught al-Sahhaf, yet. How can we not have a bead on him? He's been out publicly much more often than any other official. People don't just vanish.

I hope you're right-- that we are just not telling anyone that we have him. If we can't get Bob, how can we get any of the senior officials-- who got away apparently at the Mosque firefight today?

FN: Chris Kline in N. Iraq: "We find ourselves about 20 miles from Mosul...quite considerable fighting in this area in last few days...some 10,000 Kurds advanced taking over village after village...as Iraqi army retreated....came under fire...as things stand...compared to Kirkut, which fell today with virtually no resistance, Mosul offers a different strategic and tactical problem...still lots of artillery there, Mosul unlike Kirkuk... has Kurdish minority...home to perhaps 50% of the Officers corp of the Iraqi army...the loyalist corp is strong indeed...they continue to fight...the allied and coalition forces take it very, very seriously...the many Kurdish soldiers are in a buoyant mood today..."

I don't know about anybody else, but I'm having a bit of Baghdad-Bob withdrawal...
We knew he was lying, everybody knew he was lying, but he always did it with such a twinkle in his eye, as if to say, "Come on, guys. I don't believe it either."

That's about right but it doesn't mean it was on purpose or that the tank wasn't receiving incoming. It's a battle. Reporters need to know that. No argument from me! They need to stay out of harm's way, and if they don't, they should blame themselves.

Roger that.
I meant to say "distinguish between radioactive elements".
I have a problem with the reports: I would still bet that
field detectors can't distinguish between uranium and
plutonium (much less isotopes thereof).
I also wonder if anyone trying to get quickly to a simple,
reliable bomb that doesn't even need testing, would bother
with Pu. After all, the first US nuke was uranium, and it
was "tested" over Japan.

FOX reports that Rumsfeld is meeting with Speaker Hastert at 4PM central. Why?
