Tariq Azziz did do a live interview after the original strike, so he did live into the first few days of the war... but he has been a ghost for a good 10+ days since.

Of course they are capable of democracy, and they are educated. Capable is one thing, but a deep rooted leader worship psychology is another.
It will take a few solid terms and elections to drive the point home. Unfortunately, they may have too many special interest groups and factions(Kurds, Shiites, Sunnis, Assyryians etc.) to allow this to happen in the near future. Don't forget that this country was a fiction created by Churchill way back. There is a tightrope to be walked here. They needed the war to wake them up, but I hope the memories of the inhumanity of the regime stay fresh long enough to see them through the adjustment period.

Re: the rappng Marine. Saw him yesterday on msnbc, with his parents being interviewed about seeing their son on tv all the way from Iraq.

They were just overjoyed to see he was doing his stuff there for the kids!

It was a really great interview.
