By DANIEL PIPES & JONATHAN CALT HARRIS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 1, 2003 -- 'U.S. flags are the emblem of the invading war machine in Iraq today. They are the emblem of the occupying power. The only true heroes are those who find ways that help defeat the U.S. military." Those words were spoken last week by Nicholas De Genova, a professor of anthropology and Latin American studies at Columbia University. De Genova went on, in words that will long shame his university, to call on U.S. soldiers to "frag" (i.e., murder) their officers and to wish "for a million Mogadishus," referring to the 1993 ambush in Somalia that left 18 U.S. soldiers dead and 84 wounded.

I graduated from Columbia in 1986 (GS Poly Sci).
Columbia hasn't changed at all since then.

I emailed diGenova that he should know what he's talking about. In Mogadishu our tiny unprepared force killed many. If he is wishing on us a body count ratio like that, we will surely win Iraq with very little difficulty. In Mogadishu, we lost a PR war and went home because our leader got scared. Our guys wanted to stay and finish the job. diGenova is an idiot...a useful idiot. But an idiot none the less.

raise hell with the trustees. they are probably corporate types who though not conservatives are probably not as wild as this nut in the "anthropology" department.
make life miserable for the trustees and you will see some action.

There will be a pro-war rally tomorrow at Columbia, where we will denounce De Genova.

You're all so dumb around here, it's unbelievable!
If you had the brains of an Ivy League professor, you would understand that only those who wish death on Americans are the truly patriotic.
It's all very nuanced and requires years of training to understand this point.

Damn, I guess I should quit my job as an adjunct professor at the local Community College before anything like that happens to me!

I'm not an adjunct any more but have been there...
I used to think that injecting my personal political and philosophical positions were secondary to the topic of discussion and an unfair use of power but now I am not so sure given that most leftists "embed" their lectures with anti American anti capitalist anti Christian horse you know what.

I don't interject any of my personal opinions in my lectures. I have always felt that was unethical. However after class if a student wanted an opinion, I would give them advice instead.

I was listening to a couple of "news readers" musing that sooo many foreigners seem to hate the USA. One said to the other that it isn't even the undereducated but (shock and awe, here) most are very well educated and educated here in the U.S. (imagine that?). After hearing of DeGenova's comments it occurs to me that perhaps this hatred comes from our very own institutions of higher learning. Rich Saudi kid is sent to Columbia--after years of this indoctrination-- he graduates and goes back home hating this nation. He is taught to hate from cradle to grave all with the help of our "educators."

We should be outraged at what De Genova said instead of wasting our time and energy on some trivial comment by ONE of the Dixie Chicks.
It is reported that he is a prof. of anthropology speicalizing in Hispanic studies -- with no background in politics or international relations.
Yet I see less outrage about him than about Johnny Rocker and Trent Lott's trivial statements.

Rush is right again- Mr. Limbaugh said this just after the
fall of communism in the old Soviet Union in 1991 that one
of the last bastions of communism in the world would be
american college campuses. How right he was even 12 years
later!!
