Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
To all who helped this get started, thank you!
Special thanks to An.American.Expatriate for staring the daily threads, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

It could be a Brit. tankI believe it's a British Chieftain, ancestor of the present-day Challenger. A number of these were captured from the Iranians during the war in the 80s.

Jaun is off his rocker
What all these ass hole journalists fail to realize is that the Iraqi people will not hide Saddams killers, in Palestine the people hide the fighters, they have popular support. In Iraq they are hated
Without popular support from the people there will be no suicide bombers

Still an excellent cartoon, though. Thanks for mentioning the Talk Show thread, I just read where Rummy stated we have 66 countries in the coalition. Wow!

The press dreams of Vietnam because they had such a large part in screwing it up...choosing the communist line over American values, history, Constitution, faith. They're hoping to re-write history and undermine America again, imho.
The NY Times is already claiming that the troops "represent working-class America". The press and leftist pols will claim 1)we send mostly minorities to the front lines, that our awesome and noble military is made up of 2) useful dupes or 3) poor people without a choice...the same lies they told, and are still telling about Vietnam vets.

It is reasonable to assume that this tank is not current.
Also note: The tank is behind a burm like the Iraqui's are noted for. It makes aerial targeting so much easier. The tank sits in a nice little "U" which cancels out any reason for camoflage.

"do the Brits use this tank today or have they already "retired" it?"
It's my understanding that some Chieftains are still in second-line use in the UK, but all the units in the Gulf have the Chieftain. The Chieftains were known as Shir-1 in Iran and had some modifications from the home version. The Challenger started as the Shir 2 for Iran, basically a Chieftain with Chobham armor and a new powerpack and drivetrain. The Shir 2s were never delivered, but a similar tank was developed for the British Army and renamed Challenger. It has been through a number of improvements since.

Easily refuted by the videocams that are everywhere this time.
Our forward troops look like rock stars (I take that back - Rock stars are usually not clean-cut, athletic and inteligent) - and I am sure that the next generation, today's schoolchildren, will think it is 'cool' to be a soldier.

No that's a Abrams. We sell them all over the middle east. They could have shot that in a field in SA, Egypt or Kuwait.
Look pretty fishy to me. It has no company or troop markings on it. It is hard to tell the upgrade level because of the the Berm in front of it. We will clear up all of this press manipulation after the war and the press will look like idiots.

Chris Matthews is a dumb a*******. These news people think they are military planners. They're so stupid, it's pathetic.

He was counting down a list of things. He started with his little finger, then his ring finger, then he gave Tony the finger. He didn't know he was doing it, but it was quite distinct and anybody with a tape will have a great screen capture.
