It's my understanding that some Chieftains are still in second-line use in the UK, but all the units in the Gulf have the Chieftain. The Chieftains were known as Shir-1 in Iran and had some modifications from the home version. The Challenger started as the Shir 2 for Iran, basically a Chieftain with Chobham armor and a new powerpack and drivetrain. The Shir 2s were never delivered, but a similar tank was developed for the British Army and renamed Challenger. It has been through a number of improvements since.

I realize I'm jumping in on this in the middle of the conversation, but the Brit tank they're using over there is the Challenger II....and their Infantry Fighting Vehicle is called the Chieftan if memory serves correctly.
