Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:
Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Article and reference sent to Milwaukee talkshow host who is quite influential. I am sure this will become ammo tomorrow. Charlie Sykes or Mark Belling?
We used to live in Milwaukee and have family in and around the area.

Looks like soon we'll have 1ID(-) and 173d ABN BDE in Bashur, 3ID(M) and 1st MARDIV south of Baghdad, and 4ID(M) coming in soon from Um Kasr.
101st AASLT DIV and 82d ABN DIV remain in reserve and there are elements of the 75th IN RGT(RGR) running around up north somewhere also methinks.
That should be plenty of combat power to hammer whatever needs hammerin'.

Question: do we need more troops?
Rummy: No. This is a well thought out plan. It's in place. It's a plan that has been worked thru carefully by the JCStaff and designed in a way so that forces could flow over a sustained period.

I'm confused on the whole needing more troops thing. Don't we have something like 250,000-300,000 troops over there? How many are the Iraqi's supposed to have and how many of them are left?

Major Garret (sp?) is on Fox right now discussing that. He said there are some old school military folk that are wanting this to be a Vietnam style overwhelming force.

. . .could you please give me more info on this? Link below. I think the operative paragraph is the third or fourth one.
Bill Clinton starts the "this will be a cakewalk" rumor
Bill Clinton said, "In the face of the foot dragging, hawks in America have been pushing for an immediate attack on Iraq. Some of them want regime change for reasons other than disarmament, and, therefore, they have discredited the inspection process from the beginning; they did not want it to succeed. Because military action probably will require only a few days, they believe the world community will quickly unite on rebuilding Iraq as soon as Saddam is deposed."

Rumsfeld said something that made alot of sense to me, there is a pic of Saddam in every room in every building in Iraq, its hard for those people not to think he is as big as he thinks he is...

250,000 "troops" translates into about 75,000 combat troops in country. The other 175,000 are support, maintenance, intelligence, or naval based on ships.
