Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Tiger Woods statement on Iraq:

Woods Lends Support to Troops Overseas

26 March 2003 by Tiger Woods

I have great respect for the men and women fighting overseas to protect our way of life in Iraq and other parts of the world. As the son of an Army officer, I understand the strength, courage and discipline required to successfully carry out their missions in hostile environments and feel tremendous pride they are representing us.

Obviously, no one likes war. Our Congress and President tried hard to avoid the use of force, but ultimately decided it was the best course of action. I like the assertiveness shown by President Bush and think we owe it to our political and military leaders, along with our brave soldiers to be as supportive as possible during these difficult and trying times. I just wanted to take this opportunity to let our forces know that I am thinking about you and wishing you and your families the best.

US has bombed militia bases, says Iran

By Najmeh Bozorgmehr in Tehran and Gareth Smyth in Suleimaniya,,northern Iraq

Published: March 27 2003 4:00 | Last Updated: March 27 2003 4:00

The US has bombed the village bases of three northern Iraqi-based militias in the past few days, local and Iranian sources said yesterday, as its Kurdish allies predicted an imminent ground offensive against an Islamist group claimed by Washington to have links with al- Qaeda.

Khasraw Gul Mohamed, a spokesman for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) - one of two main parties controlling the Kurdish northern enclave - said last night that ground operations would begin "within days" against villages held by Ansar al-Islam, after US bombing of its strongholds near Halabja continued for the second successive day.

Mr Mohamed claimed that two members of the group killed by the PUK on Monday night had been identified as "Afghan Arabs" linked to al-Qaeda by PUK-held Ansar al-Islam prisoners.

But he criticised Friday's US bombing of a second Islamist group, Komal, which he said had resulted from the US having different sources of information.

In a possible reference to Ansar al-Islam, US President George W. Bush said yesterday that US forces had destroyed the base of a terrorist group in northern Iraq that was targeting the US and Europe for a "deadly poison" attack.

Separately, however, a senior Iranian official claimed US attacks had destroyed two military bases of the People's Mujahideen (MKO), listed as a terrorist group by the US State Department.

The MKO, an Iranian armed opposition group, has been based in Iraq since the mid-1980s and is financed and equipped by the Baghdad regime.

The organisation, which has waged operations against Iranian civilians and assassinated Iranian officials since the 1980s, also helped Baghdad to suppress the failed Shia uprising in 1991.

It is accused by the US of having killed US military personnel and civilians working on defence projects in Tehran during the 1970s.

To complicate matters further, there were local reports of fighting near Khanaqin between Khalq and Iranian-backed Shia forces of the Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution in Iraq (Sciri).

The Iranian official said that Tehran had not been informed of the bombardment of the MKO. But he added: "We've got the information that it was a planned attack."

Since the beginning of the war three stray missiles have hit Iran's western border towns of Abadan, Sardasht and Qasr-e-Shirin.

Well I guess Iran is not as silent in the Islamic world as they seem to be in our press.

USWAR/Iran and Russia warn of 'humanitarian tragedy'

Tehran, March 26, IRNA -- Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and his
Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharrazi on Wednesday held telephone
conversations in which the two warned against an unfolding
'humanitarian tragedy' in Iraq as a result of the US-led invasion.

"The signs of humanitarian tragedy are emerging," Kharrazi said.
Ivanov said 'Moscow's views conform with those of Tehran and the
(Persian Gulf) region now is on the brink of a humanitarian and
ecological disaster and America must accept responsibility for (the
unfolding tragedy in) the occupied regions'.

The Iranian minister also expressed concern over the 'massive
invasion' launched by the coalition forces, saying 'American troops
may resort to every possible means since it is very embarrassing for
them to see they are halted (by the Iraqi resistance)'.

"The Security Council must effectively intervene to prevent the
continuation of this unequal war," Kharrazi said.
"Najaf and Basra (in southern Iraq) are under the fire of the
aggressors and attacks on Iraqi citizens have caused heavy losses and
must be immediately halted," he added.

Ivanov said 'it is important to work with the media and present
accurate information (about the ongoing war) in order to enlighten the
world public opinion about the truth so that the invading forces
cannot go ahead with their aggression through blackouts'.

Both Iran and Russia are staunchly opposed to the US-led war.

The Islamic Republic has strongly condemned the invasion but the
country which fought an imposed war between 1980 and 1988 with Iraq --
then a close American ally -- has taken a position of 'active
neutrality' and reiterated that it will not back one side or another
in the US-led war.

This war is bogged down, people are shooting at us,and we don't have enough troops, bombing civilians, being too careful to not kill civilians, and ......Well I just thought I throw out the Word of the day from arm chair Generals to chew on.

I thought I'd get a rise out of someone! I didn't mention all I've heard but this should get the blood flowing.

OK, You got my blood flowing, The weather is clearing, non-conbatents get KIA sometimes, and as RR said, we must stay the course. BTW, We've got the northern front open, it's daytime, and things are looking up.

I know how you feel Naspino. I just flipped through the 3 networks, Aaron Brown on CNN licking his lips with glee about how slow the war was going with that noted military expert Thomas Friedman, then on MSNBC a discussion about the supposed horrible civilian casualties from what looked to me to be Saddam's car bombs in the market, and then Shep Smith on Fox talking to some British communist in Bagdad explaining how the civilians hated us for dropping bombs on them, denying that anyone thought we were trying to avoid civilians, and telling us with an excited tone to his voice that Iraqi television was back on the air. Time to take a break from T.V. for a while.

Amen. Nice to see someone come out on the side of the troops.

I agree. And Amen to your earlier posts regarding women in combat, BTW. I'm actually pleasantly surprised to see Tiger saying anything even remotely political after his dodging of the Augusta issue. But, I'm certainly glad to see his support. I just hope Tiger doesn't get too intimidated if he finds out that someone as famous as Michael Moore is on the other side.

MCNBC has a large phallic-thing on their live cam web-feed. What is that?

The Church of the Everlasting Hard-on ?

Really though, the should engineer those things to NOT look the way they do. They bow down before a phallic object, kneel and raise their butts into the air 5 times a day. I'm amazed that islam is not WILDLY popular in San Francisco.
