They only show their derision for liberty by insulting the symbol thereof. But their vandalism of the 9/11 memorial plaque is beneath the gutter.
They can have the statue back, if they really want it (and want to pay for its removal). I'd be sorry to see her go, but the Stars and Stripes is the only earthly symbol of freedom I need.

I think we ought to pull a squad of infantry out of Iraq and send them to France... to conquer them for the Hell of it!

Germany owed a war-debt to France but couldn't pay. The USA and Great Britain loaned the money to Germany, and Germany only ever repayed 20%. So, in effect, the USA and GB paid German's war debt to France.
That's the only info I could find on war-debts.

While in the U.S. Navy a shipmate and myself went on a tour with other Navy folk to Torremolinos. It so happened that we met and lunched there with a group of Frenchmen staying at the same hotel as part of another tour group.
My shipmate and I shared a room. As I keep farmer's hours I went to bed at 7pm. She went downstairs for the dancing at the Hotel's club.
At around 11:30pm a couple of drunken Frenchmen start banging on the door to our room, screaming that I must be rude since I wouldn't let them in ( I think they added something about sex in that request but thank God my French isn't THAT good.) I ignored them and went back to sleep.
My friend later told me the two had come downstairs and complained I was arrogant and rude. She brought them upstairs to prove I was actually asleep.

Ah yes, the French predilection for accusing others of what they are/ are doing.
