ABC’s War News Touts Doubt and Dissent

The Most Biased Network During the Pre-War Months Now Offers the Most Biased Iraq War Coverage

ABC’s War News Touts Doubt and Dissent

Peter Jennings may have been late for the war — while Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather were reporting the first U.S. air strikes last Wednesday, ABC viewers had to wait a half-hour for Jennings’ arrival — but the anchor’s bias has been far more problematic than his tardiness. ABC’s coverage of the first days of Operation Iraqi Freedom have revealed the network’s pattern of boosting anti-war protesters while denying the benefits of U.S. action:

ABC's Peter Jennings     • Thursday, March 20: During mid-afternoon coverage, Jennings conveyed how he was “very struck” by “huge” anti-war ads in newspapers, bemoaning how “history tells you that it’s going to be very difficult for people who are opposed to the war to debate it now that the forces are in combat.” Minutes later, Jennings pleaded with Democratic Senator Joe Biden: “A large number of people in the country are opposed to this...but look to members of the Democratic party, particularly, to be sort of their port in a storm, their place to manifest their dissatisfaction.” Biden retorted that protesters should not look to him to denounce U.S. policy during wartime: “They’ve got the wrong port....The decision’s been made.”

A few hours later, rumbling through the Iraqi desert with the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, ABC’s Ted Koppel pontificated to Jennings: “I just think, Peter, we ought to take note of the significance of what is happening here, because this is an invasion that in this particular case, of course, was not prompted by any invasion of the United States.”

     • Friday, March 21: Shortly after major air attacks on key buildings in Baghdad, ABC’s Terry Moran asked Ari Fleischer if the President cared about the deaths of innocent Iraqi civilians: “Have you heard him talk about this responsibility, which may weigh on him heavily today, and that is for the deaths of innocents, for Iraqi moms and dads and children who may, despite our best efforts, be killed?”

During ABC’s prime time coverage, Jennings decried Bush’s lack of responsiveness to anti-war demonstrators. He wondered to former Ford, Reagan and Clinton aide David Gergen: “Seeing the people in the streets of Washington today right across from Lafayette Park, people in Chicago, San Francisco, New York, demonstrating against the war, there’s a tendency, I think, in the administration to — pretend is not quite the right word — pretend it isn’t happening.”

Jennings spent much of Friday night’s coverage doing his part to make sure the anti-war side was heard, including an eight-minute interview with two far-left leaders of anti-war groups in which Jennings tossed softball questions such as, “Why do you feel so strongly about this war?”

     • Saturday, March 22: In the morning, ABC reporter Chris Cuomo (son of the former New York Governor Mario Cuomo) picked up where Jennings left off. Previewing new protests, he insisted that anti-war activists represented more than the tiny fraction of the country that shares their views: “In American history, protests like this have been prescient indicators of the national mood, so the government may do well to listen to what’s said today.”

Later, Jennings doubted whether celebrations from freed Iraqis were even genuine: “Yesterday we saw images of a jubilant reception in the southern Iraqi town of Safwan where... people tore down a picture of Saddam Hussein and jumped in the streets, at least for the cameras.” ABC’s John Donvan, who’s not embedded with any U.S. unit, went to Safwan and found angry Iraqis. “What I saw was a lot of hostility towards the coalition forces, towards the United States, towards George Bush.”

Other networks are satisfied to factually convey the war’s developments. ABC has apparently chosen to continue its months-old anti-war crusade into coverage of the conflict itself. -- Brent Baker and Rich Noyes

ABC has truly been over the top recently. Glad MRC is bringing it to people's attention.

A few nights ago, Jennings interviewed by phone, an Iraqi who is one of Saddam's henchmen as a member of the Iraqi Parliament. Jennings asked him how things were in Baghdad after the bombing of the night before. The Iraqi proceeded to use his air time to spew lies about civilian deaths (he could not sleep because an old woman living next door dropped dead from the shock of the bombing) and he said we had no good reason to be attacking them. Jennings let him go on forever, spewing pro-Saddam propaganda. He did not challenge him once. He kept thanking the Iraqi liar over and over again for taking the time to be interviewed. After the Iraqi hung up, Jennings weaseled out by saying that he presented the propagandist as an example of the fact that not all Iraqis will welcome us into Baghdad. When is Jennings going to be deported? Or better yet, strapped to a bomb and dropped on Baghdad.

This morning on the ABC radio affiliate's top-of-the-hour news, all but one of the half dozen or so Iraq war items were about our losses.

In a surprise move today, the U.S. media capitulated completely to the rag-tag Iraqi forces. In a move reminiscent of the Clinton White House following some casualties in Somalia, images of somebody actually getting killed in this “antiseptic” war, has caused the media to surrender unconditionally to Saddam.

“Like, Oh my God! Icky!”, as Amanpour laid down her mike and ran for the hotel.

“Dude, no way!” from Wolf before collapsing into a fetal position.

“CNN. What a bunch of wussies!” was the word from Ollie North.

Apparently, surrender of the media is not universal.

Tonight ABC interviewed someone who said that it was unlikely that the Apache was brought down by a farmer, saying that it would have to be a lucky strike, and Jennings threw in as a tag line at the end something like "a lot of planes are shot down because of a lucky strike."

Not just this morning, it started days, if not weeks, ago. The anti-war protestors are a small fringe element of this country and ABC is treating them as if they've got the 75% majority.

ABC's bias is affecting how much time I spend listening to Rush, Sean, and a local pro-the-war-effort host, Chris Core and is ruining an otherwise fairly decent station in Washington, D.C., WMAL. I can't think when I've tuned to them in the past four days for news and they've been my default radio station for years. It would be nice if Fox News put together a radio service for the ClearChannel stations.

I saw that. Must be a PLO friend of Jennings arranged that call and contact.

The guy sounded absurd. But he wasn't a total liar, he couldn't make up a story about seeing civilian casualties even though prompted by Jennings.

And to a question whether the Iraqi people wanted Saddam out, he said the oddest thing. He said he knows the opposite because when the bombs hit their targets many were saying "Allahu Akbar" - God is Great. Doesn't that sound more like support for the bombings?

I usually use Fox News as a virtual radio. I tune a VCR to Fox News, pipe the audio into the speakers, and don't bother turning on the video. No reason to wear out the picture tube looking at newsreaders.

ABC Radio has a strong anti-war/defeatist/doubting/savoring-the-screwups slant, too. It's really bad. ABC is clearly tailoring its message to please a particular demographic.

Speaking of radio, can anyone comment on XM radio? I'm interested in the cost and what they can do.

They don't have Fox News already? I'm surprised. I will have to head down that road, then because what's offerred now is deplorable.
