It is just fabulous to see this plan -- leading with a ground assault -- taking territory. It is the opposite of what everyone has assumed for more than a decade is American doctrine. We were becoming predictable. Everyone knew how we operated.

Now they don't. Now they can't make assumptions. Our enemies around the world are seeing that we're not "one dimensional". Our ground forces are the "shock and awe". It's great for our army, who don't get all the glitz and glamour that other branches do -- but this is their game now.

Believe me, there are militaries around the world right now that are dropping their collective jaws in disbelief -- and taking stock of our ability to eat up territory on the ground, without a huge air assault first.

This will make a few more dictators think they need an extra dose of Metamucil.

From the map, it looks like it's around 300 miles.

I'm so proud of my boys!

I was 3rd ID 1971-73, Aschaffenburg, Germany. That squeaking, sqwauking sound of all those armored vehicles brings back lots of memories.

I wonder what ChIraq thinks about this. Ironically, Third ID was in the forefront of saving France in WWI, then again in WWII. Now they'll take a role in liberating the Iraqi people. And Chiraq won't respect that, either

Almost like a Stonewall Jackson battle plan.

What's a Stonewall Jackson battle plan? On the same note, I know he's considered one of the world's greatest generals and, other than standing fast like a stonewall, I wonder if you could tell us why this is so.

Hey, it was pretty good TV, even though the 3d was not the first into Iraq and Ted was his usual pompous self.

It was the best I've seen out of Ted in a long, long time. You got some sense of the scope of the force and the commander he interviewed was both smarter and more articulate than Ted--very sharp.

I'm with you. Before reading your comments here, on the American The Right War thread, I just wrote:

All the talk of tactics, shock ' awe, cruise missles, etc., and it seems we've done something even more marvelous: we're taking old-time war to Saddam -- tanks, troops, and massive, concentrated firepower supported by intelligence and air cover. This won't sit well over at the Air Force, but to win wars, soldiers have to set up shop in the enemy's backyard. What we're seeing here tonight is absolutely brilliant. Gen. Grant would be too proud.

That said, I'm noticing an absence of news reports on aviation action. Clearly, we wouldn't move into Iraq without total control of the air. Expect news by tomorrow a.m. of F-18s, B-52s, B-1s, and their smartest and wonderfully dumb bombs. When our ground meets their ground, the heavens will explode.

Other things, many things, incredible things we won't know about for a while are happening at a stupendous rate. The boys are popping the manhole covers and shining lasar beams on the next dead Iraqi. Don't be deceived by the present tense. This is total war.

I have a nephew in the Air Force Academy -- and I couldn't be more pleased to see the Army get it's glory today. And yes, there most certainly has been air support. But the fascinating thing is that the great bulk of the air power has been used to support the ground action, not to go after strategic targets in Baghdad. There is air control, air cover and air support -- but it's damn nice to see the star of the show be the army infantry, cav and armor eating up the Iraqi territory to invest Baghdad.

And let's not forget the Marines who are in a fire fight right now taking Basra.

Kudos to the aviation forces for playing their role. I'm still struck by the lack of press reporting on air activities, which means to me that much more is going on than we'd like anyone to know about.

This entire operation is unimaginable. All elements seem to be curling together like fingers making a fist.

I'm beginning to think you won't see the "shock and awe" (I hate that term now) until Baghdad is being assaulted. It really seems like they are rolling everything into place in Iraq, and more importantly they are not rushing things - they seem to really going for a coordinated attack (the shock and awe) - seeing all of the units rolling into Iraq, it feels like they'll reach a point, halt, make the Iraqis stew even more/and or surrender, and then just knock the living **** out of them.

Feels like one of the campaigns out of WWII. As modern as things are, this feels like a true campaign, and not a "jump in, hit this, jump out" which is what I was kinda worried about. They are taking care to make sure they get no surprises from the rear, and that they all move as one.

Thanks for your thoughts. I agree. For the key Iraqi forces around Baghdad to surrender, there has to be someone to surrender to. We need to be there first.

Yes, one wonders, truly wonders, at the feints and ploys we've been pulling off. This starts with the President's having put the UN in a box.
