Unpatriotic Conservatives

"I respect and admire the French, who have been a far greater nation than we shall ever be, that is, if greatness means anything loftier than money and bombs."
— THOMAS FLEMING, "HARD RIGHT," MARCH 13, 2003

rom the very beginning of the War on Terror, there has been dissent, and as the war has proceeded to Iraq, the dissent has grown more radical and more vociferous. Perhaps that was to be expected. But here is what never could have been: Some of the leading figures in this antiwar movement call themselves "conservatives."

These conservatives are relatively few in number, but their ambitions are large. They aspire to reinvent conservative ideology: to junk the 50-year-old conservative commitment to defend American interests and values throughout the world — the commitment that inspired the founding of this magazine — in favor of a fearful policy of ignoring threats and appeasing enemies.

And they are exerting influence. When Richard Perle appeared on Meet the Press on February 23 of this year, Tim Russert asked him, "Can you assure American viewers . . . that we're in this situation against Saddam Hussein and his removal for American security interests? And what would be the link in terms of Israel?" Perle rebutted the allegation. But what a grand victory for the antiwar conservatives that Russert felt he had to air it.

KA-BOOM!

They began by hating the neoconservatives. They came to hate their party and this president. They have finished by hating their country.

Perfect together.

Excuse me, but when folks like Sam Francis and Paul Craig Roberts delve into racialism, and others who are demanding action on immigration DON'T take them out to the woodshed, it renders the issue radioactive.

When these folks cross certain lines like delving into racialism, or implying that people are placing another country's interests above that of the USA, and others do not challenge them on that, their silence on that issue is going to be taken as consent or agreement with the statements being made.

Take a look at the quotes being cited. Ask yourself if you would want to be associated with those who make such quotes. I, for one, do not. Nor do most conservatives, particularly those who have to run for office and convince people to vote for them as opposed to just dealing with the minor pressure of putting out a column.

Take a look at two of the e-mails David Frum got, and ask yourself if maybe, there is some merit to their case:
http://www.nationalreview.com/frum/diary032003.asp

This has to be dealt with by conservatives, particularly those that want to have limits on immigration on the table for discussion. If they do not deal with those who are using racialist rhetoric, then this issue is going to be as welcome as a skunk at a picnic.

Thanks for the ping AND this post. :-)

Of course, as usual, the extreme fringers will just name call, insult us, those who write this stuff, and keep on proclaiming how much better they are. Delusion is such a sad mental disease. LOL

"Pat is Pro-white-European-American, as long as they're pumping out babies."

Pat should have made some American babies while he had the chance.

Exactly ...Pat has NO children, his sister has two. Still, Pat bellyaches that whites ( and he excludes Jews, of course he doesn't want them to have any ! ) are killing themselves off, by not having enough kids. In actuallity, Americans ARE reproducing slightly more than just at replacement numbers. Most of Europe isn't, though.

"...there is no language for a declaration of war provided in the Constitution."

Now come on!

All of FR's "constitutionalists" know that war can only be declared by men wearing buckled shoes and waistcoats!

The claims of racism associated with Buchanan and the immigration issue can best be substantiated by his constant attacks on illegal immigrantion.

It's common knowledge that half of all illegal immigrants are Mexicans, yet the Buchananites spend 100% of their time and efforts on 50% of the problem.

They are not concerned about illegal immigrants, like Pat, they are concerned about the race/ethnicity of the illegals.

At least you can be comforted by the thought that most Libertarians will support your right to marry others of similar habits.

As Pat is one of the few honest public figures out there with the backbone to bring attention to the epic invasion of millions of illegals, and the disgraceful, open border time bomb.. Too bad that history doesn't back you up. As a matter of fact, Pat Buchanan's decisive break with the "neocons," as he called them, was in the early 1990's. At that time, the GOP was thoroughly anti-illegal immigration. Newt Gingrich and Tom DeLay were trying to push through severe restrictions on I.I., and on welfare for any immigrants, whether legal or not. Dole's campaign followed suit. What caused the GOP to back off the immigration issue was sheer vote calculation--the paleos had already left the party, not over immigration but over Israel and foreign trade. The paleos also took the side of the Demoncrats in the budget battle of 1995, since they wanted to bring the GOP down by any means necessary. Then, having stabbed the GOP in the back, won Clinton a 2nd term, and caused the GOP to conclude that paleos weren't worth the trouble of seeming "anti-immigrant," the Buchananites shouted "The Republicans have sold out on immigration." Wrong, Pat, you sold us out.

Hey, Luis my friend, I can no longer in good conscience promise to buy you a bottle Dom Perignon when Castro takes his underworld express train. You're going to have to choose some other fine vintage from perhaps Spain, Italy or Australia. I'm not going to give Dom DeLouise any more opportunities to make me not laugh, either.

The single most stupid comment I (unfortunately) continue to see on this forum is "We need to close our borders." How economically ignorant, for starters, but how Un-American at the core. It's not about national security, it's about economic protection and entitlement to be unskilled, unmotivated and unproductive in a world market.

Immigration is the life blood of American economic and societal vigor and growth. Then, now and God-willing forever. The Lithuanian mechanical engineer who is driving a cab 15 hours a day to make ends meet for his family ... I want that guy as a fellow American.
