Unconfirmed opposition reports: Tareq Aziz shot dead

Unconfirmed opposition reports: Tareq Aziz shot dead Albawaba Middle East News, Jordan - 19 minutes ago

The Iraqi opposition is trying to verify reports indicating that Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz may have been killed on his way to the Kurdish part of country.

Ismail Zayer of the Iraqi opposition broke the news Wednesday, interviewed for Radio Free Europe.

According to BTA, Zayer expressed hope that this news will be confirmed by an independent source by Thursday. "The Iraqi opposition has reasons to believe that Aziz has attempted to escape into the Kurdish region of Iraq," Zayer said.

"We have received no confirmation of such information," Iraqi Charge d'Affaires in Sofia Yahya Mahdi told BTA.

"This is not true. Mr Tariq Aziz is a well-known patriot, he will stay in Iraq and he will be in Iraq till his last moment," the charge d'affaires said. He conveyed that the murder allegation is "cheap propaganda against Iraq."

"They are aggressors and have no grounds whatsoever in terms of international law or the practice of international relations," the diplomat said in connection with the planned military operation against his country.

"We have no concrete information about Tareq Aziz," Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Lyubomir Ivanov said. "We have lost the direct channels of information from Iraq because we have pulled out our embassy officers from that country. We are now trying to obtain information by cooperating with other services," Ivanov said.

If that were true , then wouldn't we have taken some safe gaurds to make sure he made it accross the border? Instead he tries to escape in daylight , at a critical time when he would be highly visable. I don't know ,I am having issues with this whole story...

Know who he was shot by?

The only reason to care is to determine who gets the credit.

Speculation: Maybe some day we'll learn that Aziz was recently the source of intel that we could not say much about for fear of endangering. Maybe it was coming through the Bulgarian embassy.

This is probably FALSE! It is very effective propaganda against an enemy to spread "news reports" that their top leadership is collapsing/surrendering/dead etc...

This will have the greatest impact on the troops and commanders. Even if the commanders know it to be false they will expend a great deal of energy to counteract it. They will never eliminate the doubt in troops minds.

Expect to see other similar reports about "Key generals defecting"; "Key generals dead"; "Republican Guard surrendering"; "Saddam on the run" and even Saddam captured".

London, March 19, IRNA -- Foreign Office Minister Mike O'Brien said
Wednesday that the British government was trying to clarify the rumor
that Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz had been killed.

"The rumor and it is no more than that at this stage, and I want
to emphasize that and I understand our source is Bulgarian source at
the moment -- is that Tariq Aziz . . . may have been killed,"
O'Brien
told MPs in the House of Commons.

"There are rumors -- we do not know if they are true," he stressed
but pledged to keep parliament informed as soon as the matter was
clarified.

Earlier O'Brien confirmed that the British government was aware of
'reports' that Aziz may have been trying to defect to Iraqi Kurdistan.

As I understand it, Aziz has either been killed or not killed. And I'm pretty sure about that.

wasn't there a rumor at the beginning of the 1991 Gulf War that he had been shot?
