NYC cab that aroused suspicion is stopped in Brewer Tuesday, March18, 2003, 12:53 PM

BANGOR (AP) -- A New York City taxi cab that aroused suspicion Tuesday morning in Maine was stopped in Brewer, and at least one of the occupants is being detained.

Steve McCausland of the Maine Public Safety Department says the sight of a New York taxi heading Down East was unusual enough for someone to report it to state police, and a teletype was issued early Tuesday.

Police eventually stopped the taxi carrying two men and a woman less than an hour later Tuesday morning in Brewer. One of the occupants owned the cab.

McCausland says one or two of the occupants have been detained because of possible immigration issues. For now, they're at the Penobscot County Sheriff's Department in Bangor.

Jeez, every one of these detainees has "immigration issues".

My local paper carried a very small article on how Canada is now being swamped with Pakistanis leaving the US. Things that make you go 'hmm'.

Easy question. The cab had New York plates. We're "Down East" and New York is "Mid East".

The only thing odd about this article is that they were going to Canada via the NY border...these folks took the long way if they were going to Calais...

They sure did.

Maybe they figured the "farmers" in Maine wouldn't notice, forgetting the "Yeah right, you blend" factor (apologies to My Cousin Vinnie.)

I've known cabbies that would give you the "Oh yeah, this is the short route" and drive you through Boliva on a cross town fare. Especially if you were drinking. They're that kind of people.

They're that kind of people.

I can vouch for that.

More info on this story.....the two were Pakistani and were both eventually arrested on immigration charges. They were heading for Canada, coming from Brooklyn, NY. It is a weird coincidence that this has happened after Bush's speech on Monday. I wonder when they left NY?

I always had very little faith in the Keystone Kops of Maine. Maybe I was wrong.....
