March 18 VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said Tuesday that countries which decided to wage war on Iraq without the consensus of the international community were assuming great responsibility before God and history.
"Those who decide that all peaceful means that international law makes available are exhausted assume a grave responsibility before God, their conscience and history," said Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls.
Navarro-Valls comment was the Vatican's first official reaction to Washington's ultimatum to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to go into exile within 48 hours or face war.
They tell the U.S. not to stop the monster, but they don't tell the monster he should step down nor do they publically denounce the monster.
What side does that put the Vatican on? If the Vatican is the "voice of God" then God is on Saddam's side...
I don't think so...
You lie.
Do I?
Why then have Catholic Bishops from Germany, France and Poland apologized for the Church's silence in the face of the Holocaust?
The French archbishop specifically said the bishops of France had acquiesced through their silence to "a murderous process" that should have been met immediately by protest and protection of the Jews. "Silence was the rule, and words in favor of the victims the exception," he said.
Guess he is lying too?
Guess all the Jews who claim the same thing about the Church during the Holocaust are lying as well?
I don't think so.
Kattracks, as you point out, the reverse is also true. Wonder if they thought about that before issuing this statement?
Lying is a sin, by the way.
Go back and read my post again.
Nowhere did I accuse the Catholic Church of collaboration with the Nazis.
And regarding the merits of claims made by John Cornwell and many Jewish leaders, that's a debate for another thread.
I simply pointed out the fact that the Church sat on it hands during the Holocaust in the same context that the Church sat on it's hands while Saddam gassed thousands of his own people and murdered at least a million.....yet NOW issues this hypocrital warning to the United States about it's "grave" responsibility before God...for doing something GOOD!
It's obscene.
Oh, and as far as your hollow judgement accusing me of lying about the Catholic Church...the fact is Bishops from Germany, France and Poland have apologized for the Catholic Church's silence during the holocaust.
Would you like to warn them about the sin of lying as well?
German, French and Polish Bishops have all apologized for the silence of the Catholic Church during the holocaust.
What "facts" did you point to? Your "facts" are your own, and do not stand in the light of truth. You have chosen to interpret the Vatican's statement as you see fit, in your fervent attempt to justify it and to cling to your belief that the Pope can do no wrong. You have deliberately chosen to misinterpret the statement, and to remain blind to what it very clearly says. In your state of denial as to the Pope's fallibility, you have stretched and twisted the meaning of the statement to fit your preconcieved notions. You hear the words of the Pope, the words don't sound right, so you search for a way to turn them around and disguise their wrongness. That is not "pointing to facts". That is hearing what you want to hear, not hearing what actually has been said.
I have always been a great admirer of this Pope. Even throughout the pedophile scandal, I refused to hold him accountable for the actions of those under him, and found myself making all kinds of excuses to keep from blaming him in any way. Like you, I wanted to believe he was incapable of error, and I didn't want that image to be shattered. But his statements regarding this war have shattered that image, and I refuse to remain in a state of denial about them. For the past several weeks, I wanted to believe that the words coming from the Vatican weren't from the Pope himself, but from liberal wolves in sheep's clothing that were expressing their own viewpoint and pretending to be speaking on his behalf. But even THAT illusion has now been shattered.
I believe the Vatican has plenty of explaining of its own to do without trying to fill God's appointment book with our foibles.
Ha. Now that is an oxymoron!
I think we should get out of the UN.
I think the Vatican is trying to be a conscience for the UN but is not being listened to.
