US, Backers Responsible Before God on Iraq - Vatican

March 18

— VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said Tuesday that countries which decided to wage war on Iraq without the consensus of the international community were assuming great responsibility before God and history.

"Those who decide that all peaceful means that international law makes available are exhausted assume a grave responsibility before God, their conscience and history," said Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls.

Navarro-Valls comment was the Vatican's first official reaction to Washington's ultimatum to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to go into exile within 48 hours or face war.

If only the Pope would remember that he is responsible before God for all the liberal theology he has allowed to invade the Chruch over the past 25 years.

If we have the ability to liberate a country, we should. It's much more debatable that we have the ability to liberate China than a debate about liberating Iraq.

China is an enemy and a threat, but it's hard to get support for going to war with a nuclear power.

As will be those who stood idle as Hitler commited atrocities.

As will be those who sat Idle while Cardinals block justice for child molesters.

Hi, Hapax. I suggest you correct the spelling of your screen name: it's hapax legomenon, with an omicron.

"The Vatican said on Tuesday countries that decide to wage war on Iraq without a global consensus must take responsibility before God and history -- making clear the Pope would not endorse their actions."

I'm sorry, but this doesn't make any sense. Regardless of 'global consensus' something is either the right thing to do or it is the wrong this to do. This kind of collectivist, wishy-washy morality bites and I'm sad to see that the Vatican holds such a position.

My problem with the Vatican is their silence on Saddam.

They tell the U.S. not to stop the monster, but they don't tell the monster he should step down nor do they publically denounce the monster.

What side does that put the Vatican on? If the Vatican is the "voice of God" then God is on Saddam's side...

I don't think so...

"...the Church that sat on it's hands while Hitler murdered 6 million jews.."

You lie.

Do I?
Why then have Catholic Bishops from Germany, France and Poland apologized for the Church's silence in the face of the Holocaust?

The French archbishop specifically said the bishops of France had acquiesced through their silence to "a murderous process" that should have been met immediately by protest and protection of the Jews. "Silence was the rule, and words in favor of the victims the exception," he said.

Guess he is lying too?

Guess all the Jews who claim the same thing about the Church during the Holocaust are lying as well?
I don't think so.

The Vatican is correct.. We will be responsible, absolutely.

Kattracks, as you point out, the reverse is also true. Wonder if they thought about that before issuing this statement?

Thanks for repeating the lies and slander of yellow gossip columnists like John Cornwell, Jorge.

Lying is a sin, by the way.

Go back and read my post again.
Nowhere did I accuse the Catholic Church of collaboration with the Nazis.

And regarding the merits of claims made by John Cornwell and many Jewish leaders, that's a debate for another thread.

I simply pointed out the fact that the Church sat on it hands during the Holocaust in the same context that the Church sat on it's hands while Saddam gassed thousands of his own people and murdered at least a million.....yet NOW issues this hypocrital warning to the United States about it's "grave" responsibility before God...for doing something GOOD!
It's obscene.

Oh, and as far as your hollow judgement accusing me of lying about the Catholic Church...the fact is Bishops from Germany, France and Poland have apologized for the Catholic Church's silence during the holocaust.

Would you like to warn them about the sin of lying as well?

I'm sure there were many good Catholics who helped the Jews.
But the heroism of some should not be regarded as a pretext to hide the failings of others.

German, French and Polish Bishops have all apologized for the silence of the Catholic Church during the holocaust.

I think I'll take my chances that God is in favor of what George is doing, more than he's in favor of Saddam.

I didn't spin anything. I pointed to facts and your reply illustrates that you do indeed take statements and make leaps and bounds conclusions from them.

What "facts" did you point to? Your "facts" are your own, and do not stand in the light of truth. You have chosen to interpret the Vatican's statement as you see fit, in your fervent attempt to justify it and to cling to your belief that the Pope can do no wrong. You have deliberately chosen to misinterpret the statement, and to remain blind to what it very clearly says. In your state of denial as to the Pope's fallibility, you have stretched and twisted the meaning of the statement to fit your preconcieved notions. You hear the words of the Pope, the words don't sound right, so you search for a way to turn them around and disguise their wrongness. That is not "pointing to facts". That is hearing what you want to hear, not hearing what actually has been said.

I have always been a great admirer of this Pope. Even throughout the pedophile scandal, I refused to hold him accountable for the actions of those under him, and found myself making all kinds of excuses to keep from blaming him in any way. Like you, I wanted to believe he was incapable of error, and I didn't want that image to be shattered. But his statements regarding this war have shattered that image, and I refuse to remain in a state of denial about them. For the past several weeks, I wanted to believe that the words coming from the Vatican weren't from the Pope himself, but from liberal wolves in sheep's clothing that were expressing their own viewpoint and pretending to be speaking on his behalf. But even THAT illusion has now been shattered.

And those who stood idly by while Iraq committed it's atrocities, including the Vatican, are assuming great responsibility before God and history.

I believe the Vatican has plenty of explaining of its own to do without trying to fill God's appointment book with our foibles.

Regarding the UN, I think that it can either be good for the world or it can be something that enslaves all of us. From my viewpoint it seems to be heading for enslavement.

I think we should get out of the UN.

I think the Vatican is trying to be a conscience for the UN but is not being listened to.
