Did anyone else hear the News Report on The Marine Sgt. on FOX news? He says INS deemed him to be of inadequate character to be a US citizen!
Marine was born in Vietnam and had some minor trouble when he was a young man, obviously the trouble was not serious enough to keep him out of the USMC but serious enough he can't be a citizen? Is there nothing we can do to help him?

I agree. He has lived here since he was less than one year old from what I read. This is the only country he can remember. I would most surely consider him PRIME material for citizenship. For someone to say otherwise is duplicitous and disingenuous. And you are correct. The ONE incident the Marine Corps had (Sgt Clayton Lonetree) was a citizen when he began his career as a Soviet spy. He was unique in Marine Corps history. We have had other incidents since then of gang members joining to learn how to be more effective killers and the recent incident of sabotage, but they all involved BORN citizens, IIRC. This young Marine is surely worthy of citizenship at once!
BTW, would that we had another Pubbie like Barry Goldwater. We need one now.

Can't deport Malvo and his mom when they are caught, but they can go after a Marine protecting his country. Typical.

How could a non-citizen even be accepted at any of our armed forces? That's not kosher, to say the least. Don't think it could be possible.

In my eight years of service in the USMC, the immigrants were far more likely to be outstanding Marines than most of their American counterparts. I don't recall meeting a non-US-citizen Marine who was a s**tbird.

Take a look at how many Irish and Germans were in the Union Army during the Civil War; then take a look at how many Congressial Medals of Honor were awarded to them, dead and alive.

Sweetie, I won't flame you. Thanks for posting this. This is appalling. Sounds like something the White House needs to jump on. Some heads need to roll.
Say, didn't the INS cease to exist? I thought it was absorbed into the OHS.

You didn't go far enough! No one should be allowed in the U.S. Military that can't prove at least four ancestors with Rev War service. {/sarcasm} That's silly, but I can do that, also had two ancestors on the lewis and clark trip. But didn't know that's why they let me in the military, I thought it was because I was Southern and good looking.

If he recieved an Honorable discharge from the Active Duty Marines then his prior "indiscretion" should be ignored. To me a honorable discharge and graduation from USMC boot camp is a much better indication of character.

This is a country of emigrants and I for one believe that if a foriegn born person wishes to serve this country in the military even if it is for the selfish reason of gaining citizenship that he would make a more worthy citizen than those who spit on our flag in our own country. He is willing to put his life on the line and work his way through hell to be an American, That is what makes a true American.

"inadequate character over something he did as a teenager. But I guess not inadequate enough to put on the Marine uniform and prevent him from fighting and dying for this country."And I guess this bunch of twits wasn't paying attention years ago when the alternatives were MILITARY/JAIL. The military straightened out a lot of trouble-bound boys in those days.

That is garbage. If the north had not taken folks off of the boats they would have had around half the fighting force they fielded against the south. We have always had immigration into the armed forces.

"This is what can happen when non-citizens are allowed to server in the military which I've never really understood. I hope the INS's position can be reversed. "
But on the OTHER hand, look at all the Americans who went to England and Canada and joined THEIR armed forces, before we entered WWII.
Thye were patriots, they loved what was right and wanted to fight the Nazis, it wouldn't have been right for England or Canada to reject them 'cause they weren't Canadinas or Brits.
Or, for that matter...what about the Hmong that fought for the US in Vietnam? We accepted their help. And look at the Ghurkas, they're not Brits, but they fight for England.
Citizenship doesn't always guarentee patriotism. In fact, I knew a woman from South Africa, she actually overstayed her visa, and became an illegal immigrant. She eventually married a guy (who's actually the editor of a large conservative paper!) had several kids, and for as long as I've known her, she has been one of the most patriotic people I know.

What part of "I hope the INS's position can be reversed." didn't you understand? Obviously my preceeding statment, "This is what can happen when non-citizens are allowed to server in the military which I've never really understood." is somewhat qualified by my desire to see the INS reverse itself.
"Citizenship doesn't always guarentee patriotism."
I never argued the point. Heck my post was only two sentences worth.

Non-US citizens should not be members of the US armed forces -- period One of my late father's closest friends during his twenty-eight years in the United States Army was a colleague who had escaped the Russian suppression of Hungary in 1956 and later became a U.S. citizen while serving as an officer in the United States Army. This was a man who understood what the USA meant!
I guess that means my ancestors who fought in the War of Independence should not have fought since they were still English?

I don't know why the INS cannot see that this guy is making an effort to be a straight-up American. He's trying to foist all sorts of annoying paperwork upon those poor bureaucrats. If he'd just give up his efforts life would be so much easier for them.
Note, btw, that illegal aliens aren't a problem for the bureaucrats since they require zero extra paperwork. Doesn't matter if 1,000,000 come over daily--so long as there's no paperwork the INS won't mind.

No flames here either, just glad someone posted it. I'd seen it this AM but didn't catch his name or the journalist but knew someone here would get something posted about him. Hope he does get citizenship. If he's good enough for the Marines, he's more than good enough for citizenship. Pray he comes home safe and sound.
