SCIENTOLOGY: A SATANIC LINK?
By RICHARD JOHNSON with PAULA FROELICH and CHRIS WILSON
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE trendiest religion in Hollywood was founded on the teachings of a Satanist,
a new essay by Camille Paglia claims. The Church of Scientology - which boasts
Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Lisa Marie Presley, Hilary Swank, Juliette Lewis and
Kirstie Alley among its members - was founded by science-fiction writer L. Ron
Hubbard. According to an article by Paglia in Boston University's Arion journal,
Hubbard got many of his ideas from infamous devil worshipper Alistair Crowley.
"Hubbard had met Crowley in the latter's Los Angeles temple in 1945," Paglia
writes. "Hubbard's son reveals that Hubbard claimed to be Crowley's successor:
Hubbard told him that Scientology was born on the day that Crowley died."
According to the article, Scientologists perform some of the same rites that
Crowley invented, all designed to free practitioners from human guilt.
"Drills used by Scientologists to cleanse and clarify the mind are evidently a
reinterpretation of Crowley's singular fusion of Asian meditation and Satanic
ritualism, which sharpens the all-conquering will . . . Guilt and remorse, in
the Crowley way, are mere baggage to be jettisoned," Paglia says.
She writes that Crowley, a Nazi sympathizer who used opiates and hallucinogens
and called himself "The Great Beast," advocated total sexual freedom, including
orgies and bestiality.
Long after his death in 1947, the diabolist attracted even bigger followers than
Hubbard, who founded Scientology in 1954.
"Crowley's influence fell heavily on the late sixties and seventies . . . The
Beatles inserted Crowley's face (back row, second from left) in the cartoon
cover collage of their landmark `Sgt. Pepper' album," Paglia writes. In fact,
some people say the famous first line of the album, "It was 20 years ago today,"
is a reference to the year of Crowley's demise.
Other Crowley fans include Ozzy Osbourne, who dedicated an entire song to him on
his first solo album. David Bowie refers to Crowley and his cult, The Golden
Dawn, on his early song "Quicksand," and Led Zeppelin's Jimmy Page bought
Crowley's mansion, Boleskin House, in Scotland.
Now, go ask a Scientologist for thier beliefs. You'll be told that you must be "prepared" to hear all their secrets. And, of course, that preparation will cost you tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars. Just to hear what they belive in.
Actually, since most cults don't cost anything to join, you are probably doing them a disservice to call Scientology one.
Part III. Of a Christian Commonwealth.
Chap. xxxviii. Of Eternal Life, Hell, Salvation, and Redemption.[12] And first, for the tormentors, we have their nature and properties exactly and properly delivered by the names of the Enemy (or Satan), the Accuser (or Diabolus), the Destroyer (or Abaddon). Which significant names (Satan, Devil, Abaddon) set not forth to us any individual person, as proper names do, but only an office or quality, and are therefore appellatives, which ought not to have been left untranslated (as they are in the Latin and modern Bibles), because thereby they seem to be the proper names of demons, and men are the more easily seduced to believe the doctrine of devils, which at that time was the religion of the Gentiles, and contrary to that of Moses, and of Christ.
[13] And because by the Enemy, the Accuser, and Destroyer, is meant the enemy of them that shall be in the kingdom of God, therefore if the kingdom of God after the resurrection be upon the earth (as in the former Chapter I have shewn by Scripture it seems to be), the Enemy and his kingdom must be on earth also. For so also was it in the time before the Jews had deposed God. For God's kingdom was in Israel, and the nations round about were the kingdoms of the Enemy; and consequently, by Satan is meant any earthly enemy of the Church.
Part IV. Of the Kingdom of Darkness
Chap. xlv. Of Demonology and other Relics of the Religion of the Gentiles.[10] Another relic of Gentilism is the worship of images, neither instituted by Moses in the Old, nor by Christ in the New Testament; nor yet brought in from the Gentiles; but left amongst them, after they had given their names to Christ. Before our Saviour preached, it was the general religion of the Gentiles to worship for gods those appearances that remain in the brain from the impression of external bodies upon the organs of their senses, which are commonly called ideas, idols, phantasms, conceits, as being representations of those external bodies which cause them, and have nothing in them of reality, no more than there is in the things that seem to stand before us in a dream. And this is the reason why St. Paul says, "We know that an idol is nothing": not that he thought that an image of metal, stone, or wood was nothing; but that the thing which they honored or feared in the image, and held for a god, was a mere figment, without place, habitation, motion, or existence, but in the motions of the brain. And the worship of these with divine honour is that which is in the Scripture called idolatry, and rebellion against God. For God being King of the Jews, and His lieutenant being first Moses, and afterward the high priest, if the people had been permitted to worship and pray to images (which are representations of their own fancies), they had had no further dependence on the true God, of whom there can be no similitude; nor on His prime ministers, Moses and the high priests; but every man had governed himself according to his own appetite, to the utter eversion of the Commonwealth, and their own destruction for want of union. And therefore the first law of God was: they should not take for gods, alienos deos, that is, the gods of other nations, but that only true God, who vouchsafed to commune with Moses, and by him to give them laws and directions for their peace, and for their salvation from their enemies. And the second was that they should not make to themselves any image to worship, of their own invention.
Part IV. Of the Kingdom of Darkness
Chap. xlvii. Of the Benefit that proceedeth from such DarknessBesides these sovereign powers, divine and human, of which I have hitherto discoursed, there is mention in Scripture of another power, namely, that of "the rulers of the darkness of this world," [Ephesians, 6. 12] "the kingdom of Satan," [Matthew, 12. 26] and "the principality of Beelzebub over demons," [Ibid., 9. 34] that is to say, over phantasms that appear in the air: for which cause Satan is also called "the prince of the power of the air";[Ephesians, 2. 2] and, because he ruleth in the darkness of this world, "the prince of this world": [John, 16. 11] and in consequence hereunto, they who are under his dominion, in opposition to the faithful, who are the "children of the light," are called the "children of darkness." For seeing Beelzebub is prince of phantasms, inhabitants of his dominion of air and darkness, the children of darkness, and these demons, phantasms, or spirits of illusion, signify allegorically the same thing. This considered, the kingdom of darkness, as it is set forth in these and other places of the Scripture, is nothing else but a confederacy of deceivers that, to obtain dominion over men in this present world, endeavour, by dark and erroneous doctrines, to extinguish in them the light, both of nature and of the gospel; and so to disprepare them for the kingdom of God to come.
I've read some of Hubbard's Dianetics - this bit of fiction is no good.
Indeed tools of the devil
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
The conscience and guilt are gifts of God so Satan hates them. We are now being told guilt is not a good thing. That we are all victims ...Guilt is what brings us to the cross
Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and [their] thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
Jhn 8:9 And they which heard [it], being convicted by [their own] conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, [even] unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
Act 24:16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and [toward] men
2Cr 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
Hi...Sir Francis Dashwood,
Toda Rabbah for the ping-a-ling!
Cannot read thru this right now, will bookmark for later.
Yup. Looks like it might be gone for good this time.
Thanks for letting me know.
One problem was that the more the mind was opened to what was commonly called cosmic consciousness (a hippie rubric of the sixties), the less meaningful politics or social structure became,
It amazes me how few take the hint from this obvious and ubiquitous consequence.
The true cults that proliferated in the American sixties and early seventies resemble those of the Hellenistic and imperial Roman eras. Such phenomena are symptoms of cultural fracturing in cosmopolitan periods of rapid expansion and mobility. ...Hence, the cult phenomenon even at its most bizarre demonstrates the sociological dynamic of the birth of religions, as they flare up, coalesce, and strengthen or sputter out and vanish.
Wrong Camille... REbirth. It's that OLD old time religion, as it started in Babylon. The revival is intentional.
Mystery religions, which generally produced fewer and less monumental stone or chryselephantine idols, offered personal salvation through initiation into an enlightened group bound by some special secret, often involving the promise of an afterlife, a recompense for present miseries.
A consequence of the paradigm of human divinity coupled with the lack of a guiding written text, such as the Bible. Thus anyone could start and justify their own group on claims of higher spirituality by thowing in a few twists because there was no set of codified principles to contradict such an act. Judaism, Islam, and Christianity held together because of written texts and organized hierarchy, the former being the more important.
You will note that it wasn't long after translating and printing the Bible that the Reformation began. As soon as the written word was available, the people looked at the hierarchy and found it wanting.
The major Mediterranean mystery religionsof Dionysus, Demeter, Isis, and Mithrasanticipated, influenced, or vied with Christianity.
That would be JUDEO-Christianity. They both go back well before the time of Christ.
But this time (in the 60s) the nascent religions faltered under the pitiless scrutiny of modern media.
I prefer to call it an attack. See Gramsci.
But the titanic, all-enveloping sound of rock was produced by powerful, new amplification technology that subordinated the mind and activated the body in a way more extreme than anything seen in Western culture since the ancient Roman Bacchanalia. Through the sensory assault of that thunderous music, a whole generation tapped into natural energies, tangible proof of humanitys link to the cosmos.
This is just goofy. It filled a void in the groin that begins in the heart.
I stopped there. It's really a pretty lame effort.
Frank Gruber knew Hubbard and included a great portrait of him on pages 80-81 of his THE PULP JUNGLE. Note that, for legal reasons, Gruber identifies him only as "Ron":
"Another pulp writer moved into the Fourty-fourth Street Hotel, while I was living there. Several times a week he would knock on my door in the evening and come in and kick it around. Jack Reardon was often there and sometimes Mort Weisinger and Steve Fisher.
"During one such session this writer began to relate some of his own adventures. He had been in the United States Marines for seven years, he had been an explorer on the upper Amazon for four years, he'd been a white hunter in Africa for three years. As he waxed enthusiastic about his exploits, I made a few notes, and after listening for a couple of hours, I said, 'Ron, you're eighty-four years old, aren't you?'
"He let out a yelp, 'What the hell are you talking about? You now I'm only twenty-six.'
"I read from my notes. 'Well, you were in the Marines seven years, you were a civil engineer for six years, you spent four years in Brazil, three in Africa, you barn-stormed with your own flying circus for six years...I've just added up all the years you did this and that and it comes to eighty-four years...'
"The writer blew his stack. I will say this, his extremely vivid imagination earned him a fortune, some years later. He wrote one book that directly and indirectly earned him around half a million dollars in a single year."
