One Republican even suggested eliminating the 12th grade in order to balance the budget! Even if they went through the Democrat's proposed stretching of high school through two years of community college, they still would only have a sixth grade education.

Hmmm.. Just as an idle aside, the institution of "free" [sic] universal public education preceded Communist Russia, although the pit of hell admittedly preceded both...

Democrats are masters of propaganda, especially the ultimate sympathy tool: children.
Compared to lovable kiddies, fiscal responsibility just doesn't resonate with the electorate. Therefore, Republicans quite simply need to learn to express their ideas in terms of how they will help children.

I kept waiting for the author to tie the "pit of hell" comment into the GOP agenda.
It never happened. Catchy headline, but it's all smoke and no fire.

Here's my suggestion:
"Why should we pour any more taxpayer dollars into a system that graduates children from high school who cant read??? I propose that we quit giving pork to the fat sow that is our education system so our oh-so-precious children dont have to pay for it with their hard earned dollars when they become adults. THAT is how you help the freakin' children!! Thank you."
Sadly, I havent received any calls from the Republican National Committee.

Both sides need to lose the word "free education". Taxes everywhere are sky high and education is a complete joke. Along with fighting terrorism, tackling the education debacle in our country is critical. Otherwise, another generation will be filled with useful idiots pledging allegiance to the UN.

The enemy has captured our artillery and turned it against us. What started at the turn of the century, as an idea to help assimilate immigrants - to give them a start by instilling knowledge of the constitution, U.S. history and generally imparting the notion of civilized behavior, was taken over by hippies in the 60's. The result, today's public education system.

Democrats are masters of propaganda, especially the ultimate sympathy tool: children. For whatever it's worth ( take it as empirical data from just a small town ) that "for the sake of our children" spin has been a laughingstock for at least 4 or 5 years on talk radio.

Republicans have proposed a voucher program that would divert taxpayer dollars to private schools and drain money out of public schools. I guess only greedy democrats get to decide what is fair.

wholly crap the freakin chairwoman of the Texas Democratic Party writes a blathering diatribe and the freakin Comical prints it. That sounds about right.
The fact that this dolt mentioned that the comments were made after "a hearing of the House Border Affairs Committee" leads me to believe that someone was advocating educating illegals to which the Republican House member disagreed. SHe's damn right it's communist from the pit of hell.

At least Miss Malcolm is cited as a Democratic Party functionary. Stuff as bad as this is routinely published in Northeastern newspapers
as unsigned editorial content. What do you suppose the reaction would have been from the Democratic Party of Texas if the paper had printed that unabashedly partisan a broadside against a Democrat? Do you suppose they would have smiled and said, "Well, freedom of the press and all that" --? Or would they have organized letter-writing campaigns, telephone outreach banks, and candlelight vigils in protest until Hell wouldn't have them?
If it weren't for the Internet and talk radio, stuff like this wouldn't even get a critical mention.

Florida:
GOP bill draws teachers' anger***The GOP-dominated Senate Governmental Oversight and Productivity Committee on Tuesday approved Fasano's proposal (SB 1652) to limit payroll deductions only for the cost of collective bargaining and grievance adjustment. The committee split along party lines, with six Republicans supporting the measure and three Democrats opposing it.
"This bill is telling me to shut my mouth," said Maureen Dinnen, president of the teachers union, who was visibly shaking with anger after the vote. "We voted to support candidates who were chosen based on their educational positions. "

What started at the turn of the century, as an idea to help assimilate immigrants...American public education began at the turn of the (I assume "Twentieth") Century?
First time I've heard that.

Children's Health Insurance Program If Texans love this program so much, the Republicans should fund it with an endowment supported by voluntary tax deductible contributions. That way if Texans really want the program, they can donate to it.

The one historically proven effective mechanism, found to be essential in the raising of functioning members of the American Republic, has been identified.
That essential factor has been given a name; the term is "parent".
Take careful notes as an exam will follow.

The progressive movement around that time brought the idea of secular eduction to the fore from what previously was mostly religious/local sources.
eduction = education.

Children's Health Insurance ProgramCheck the schools in your area and see if this is going into effect. It certainly is being done in California and I'm sure elsewhere. It began in earnest as soon as Hillary's universal health care cratered.
As a nice tie-in to medical for the children, family doctor's were enlisted after Colombine to ask children if there where guns in their homes - it is considered a mental health issue according to Al, Tipper and all "caring" Democrats. The Left never lets an opportunity pass them by.
