The Lowdown on the Showdown

Posted on 03/14/2003 5:47:33 PM PST by GLDNGUN

While most are aware by now that President Bush, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar will confer Sunday in the Azores, it seems just as many do not realize the weight of this meeting. This truly is a “war council”...

You are thinking the other leaders have been invited, but have kept mum about it.

Yes. I was thinking about the Letter signed by the "Gang of 8" that sent Schroeder and Chirac into orbit.

I was thinking maybe it was going to be a teleconference - because I believe the Azores is a substitute landing place for the Shuttle Orbitor, and there might be the tech available to bring that off without the leaders having to travel.

Excellent analysis. I think that makes a tremendous amount of sense.

....after Bush speaks to America on Monday night, their "meeting" will be a moot point.

It may be a moot point after the speeches tomorrow afternoon...

Honestly, dear CyberAnt, we may never know for sure one way or another -- so as to keep the French, German, and Russians off-balance and the Saddamites quaking in their boots.

It is better to be in the UN fighting to fix it, then out and watching the Socialists turn it into a World Govt. without US influence.

We should force a reform agenda: No votes for dictatorships; all countries must be democratic and free of human rights abuses or they kicked off the UN secty council (bye bye China and Syria) and lose voting rights in gen'l assembly.

End the veto power of has-been countries (bye bye France) and those who dont pay their way (Russia, if you want a veto pay up, otherwise let Japan take over for you).

Cut the big bureaucracy and the padded cushy jobs for 3rd world-types. Cut the staff 80% (most of it is useless advocacy of liberal agenda items that *WE* pay for. End it.)

By the time we are done, the UN will be slimmed down into the only thing it can and should be: A talk shop for the foreign ministers to discuss int'l affairs.

We DONT actually want the UN to be "relevent" to such matters as disfaning a tyrant. Power corrupts, and UN power could corrupt world power.

True; so true - I forgot they were going to hold a conference after the day long meeting.

If they don't say what I think they're going to say, I'll try to contain myself (because I understand they know more than I do) - but if they do say what I think they'll say, I'm going to be jumping up and down - and waiting for the EU weasels to begin sputtering and spitting. It should be toooooo fun to watch!!

An excellent thread, sir. ;^)

If a new Alliance is formed, this would truly be an epochal moment in modern history.

..it is expected to surprise most people due to its shortness of duration and relative little bloodshed. Most of the dirty work may actually be done BY the Iraqi military as they take care of Saddam themselves…

GLDNGUN, thank you for this analysis. This charade did expose the Rats, didn't it? A month ago most Americans thought we should bow to the UN. Now most Americans say to go it alone. GW helped undo decades worth of pro-UN propaganda in just weeks.

Unanswered question, can we survive the international mainstream media - BBC and AP - when they are so spiritually off track that they keep treating Saddam ("Joe, the village liar" to Rummy) as President Bush's moral equivalent?

Meekie, thanks for the heads up. (^;

Some "willing participants" are desirable that their efforts are quiet in public..... like Jordan, who is allowing choppers and other stuff; Saudi Arabia..... who is not only allowing overfly rights that Turkey wouldn't give us by allowing the cruise missles to fly over their land, but also giving us access to bases for refulers and rescuse choppers, etc.

And a host of other neighboring nations, all probably fearful of internal retribution.

I think we should respect their wishes.

"Bush could well use our exit from the UN as a campaign issue. He could say he would lead our removal from the UN in his second term. This could be VERY popular if it plays out right. That will leave the demo opponent with agreeing to leave the UN (can you imagine a demo even having such a thought pass their head? LOL) OR to oppose a very popular idea."

Now there's a thought that's a breath of fresh air!
